X-Com: UFO Defense

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

do not torment the sleep deprived artist, he may be vicious when cornered,
in case of emergency, administer caffeine to the artist,
he will become docile after that,
and less likely to stab you in the eye with a mechanical pencil

This game rocks unbelievable amounts.

Get Heavy Plasma and blaster gun and punish those snakemen/mutons with impunity. Also, NEVER sell elerium, and you can gain quick funds my manufacturing/selling medikits. Always have at least one quick deployment group (if you have Avenger, that is) and one reserve group, which can also defend you from unneeded invasions. Get rid of short range radars, as they suck like a 15-year old crackwhore.

Specialize your troops. Majority should have heavy plasma, with one or two blaster dudes (another one can actually carry ammo and have heavy plasma/laser rifle as primary weapon). Always have at least two Small Launchers with full ammo (IIRC the full one man can carry is 12 rounds, I don't know) in case you meet something interesting. Base raids REQUIRE you to have one-two slauncher guys, since only there you can capture Commanders. Laser rifle is a-OK, since it's really accurate and quite lethal.

Lick major countries' ass - China, Germany, France, Britain and USA being to most important.
lol wtf

Loved this game on my Amiga. Haven't played it on the PC though.

Don't know why they changed the title to UFO : Enemy Unknown in Europe though.

Pfff, buy exclusively laser weapons, and never bother about ammos again :p
Just get a few of those homing rugby ball launchers for the later missions when aliens get tougher. Those things make any mission easy as cake, btw, so it's always good having a few handy :p ( at the end, all my dudes had that flight suit, the ball launcher and a laser riffle. They also worked in teams of 2 or 3, one with one of those mind reading spheres, and one with a stun projectile launcher  ).
And reload when one of your dudes die, I finished the game w/o one casualty, coz they're like terminators if they can get through the whole games ( rah, the giant time bar :D ).

B-b-but Heavy Laser is just so much worse than Heavy Plasma (can't hit a side of a barn and try take out cyberdiscs and mutons with it)! And IIRC it does not have autoshot, which is THE BEST THING when you have heavy weapons + an experienced dude + facing horrible odds.

And yeah, save every turn. Your troops will become heroes (and switch them occasionally, just in case).
lol wtf

That's why I recommend laser rifles only :p they autoshot, and believe me, three dudes gathering their shots on anything will kill it.
Gotta be honest, UFO was nothing compared to terror from the deep, difficulty-wise :) "remembers with shivers the invincible lobster-men and the way higher risks of panic or being mind-controled your troops faced"

As for horrible odds, well, as I said, the rugby ball ( can't remember the name, blah ) is there for that :). In some missions, around the end of the game, I couldn't really bother going through the whole mission, so I pinpointed more or less the position of the aliens, and nuked the level accordingly :D

Go to xcomufo.com BTW. They are working on a remake.

It's a pitty you can't play the game on heavier difficulties - it's a bug so only Beginner is playable.

If your PC can't seem to run it get Dosbox.

There's an awsome fanfic on fanfiction.net from Andre Galvano. He's not a native English speaker and it was his first fic, so sometimes there are very bad spelling/grammar mistakes.

BUT! (and what a but this is!)

The NOVEL RULES! (Yes, novel it's quite long, 30 - smg. chapters).

Is there not a quake2-engine based 'homage' of UFO lying around somewhere, too?

First of all, DO check out UFO: Alien invasion. A freeware fan project, which is based on the open sourced Quake 1 engine.

Before you go beserk and start screaming murder bloody murder, I must say that the game is pretty much as you left it, turned based and all. It is just that it is GORGEOUS to look at.

They got an alpha and it plays JUST LIKE XCOM.

for the media

http://ufo.myexp.de

for some news. I sincerely hope it is the last best hope for an xcom. The fact that it is also freeware is MUSIC to my ears!!
If you want to be ready for Wing Commander Saga: The Darkest Dawn, then download and play the prologue first.

Here,

http://www.wcsaga.com/downloads/files/download/releases-prologue-setup-exe.html

Then, while waiting for the Darkest dawn, Download Starshatter 4.02

http://www.starshattermods.com/infusions/pro_download_panel/download.php?did=214

You 'll understand why once you have.
