Right...I'm off to London for a week, and I'm wondering if anyone knows of decent stuff to do / places to go at night.  I'm down there for work, so getting pissed is out of the question, natch.  But at the mo i may very well be stuck in a bloody hotel room (which may be the cheapest in London, with my luck), so any advice on good distractions would be welcome. :)

EDIT: on the 19th

Check out china town for an interesting experience - it helps if you like chinese food obviously but the service is generally good and the food is fantastic. There's also quite a lot of shops and such to look around, you could probably pass away a happy couple of hours there (at least, if its your scene).

Failing that theres the obvious sights... tower bridge, the London Eye / Dome (bah), Big Ben...Canary Wharf and St Pauls Cathedral. Not bad if buildings is what floats your boat.

Uh...there's also some good cinemas around but being central London you can expect to pay quite steep prices for them - again that should be an easy way to waste a few hours.

To be honest I'm not sure how late shops close in London (I rarely stay out late there unless I'm going to a gig or something) but the chances are that something will be open, Harrods and such are there of course and you can definitely waste some time in there - there's always something to look at.

Funny really.. I should know about the place, living close and all, but I really couldn't recommend anything better. Heh... good luck - if you've any questios feel free to ask :)

Harrods closes about 6pm but Regent and Oxford Streets tend to stay open much later.

When I'm not allowed to talk about getting drunk my knowledge of London takes a sharp nosedive :)

Even then the problem with getting drunk in London is that it costs so much... at least if you go clubbing or something similar. Sure thats mostly for mainstream places but you know what I mean.

Having grown up within commuting distance of London, I know of a few good places to go during the day. :)

The Tower of London is always interesting, as is HMS Belfast, the Imperial War Museum, the Science Museum and a whole pile of other things. There's always something to suit tastes. :)

Oh, and stay far away from Soho! :D

That's the second time I've heard someone say that this month. Did you guys all meet up and had a bad experience in Soho strip joint or something? :D

A small request if you would.

If you shoot some pictures while you're there, would you be willing to post them here when you get back?  I've never been overseas.

Have a great trip :).

Check out the London Eye (I actually found the cables that held the whole thing upright more impressive), the HMS Belfast, go to Hampton Court maze and come up with the worlds best excuse for being 2 hours late back from lunch ;) Worked for me :D

London Zoo is worth a visit if the queues are short. The Planetarium and the Waxworks are both expensive and tended to leave me cold though, oh, and my own personal childhood favourite, the National History, Geography and Science museums are all worth a look :)

Watch out for London Transport Police, they have a Bee in their bonnet about not being 'real' policemen.

If it's pictures of London you want, I could probs get some this week if I go into town :)

Flipside :D

Nope, the LT Police are part of the Met :)

Only london tourist-y type thing I've done recently is go on the London eye (only had a few hours in the city, you see).  Its probably worth the time, I'm not sure when its open till, but it makes a change from the skyline of glasgow.

I doubt I will..... slight disadvantage of not actually having a camera :D.   (well, there is one, but the film got use up at my graduation)

I know I went to London when I was 4, but I can't remember more then a few street artists, one or two shops, and stuff like that. The most I remember is being driven around London on the M, errr, 5?

Just came from London a few weeks ago. The hotel room was crap, but the city itself very nice. Met kara, it was nice to actually meet in person someone you talk with on weekly or daily basis. The tube is very easy to use, as long as you can read the map. Don't worry about it :)

The London Eye is a must, the view is just amazing. The museums are there of course, Natural History Museum was my favorite. Greenwich is a good place to visit, with the Cutty Sark (the clipper), the GMT line and the National Maritime museum. You can get a great view from top of St. Paul's, if you're up to the 530 step climb :D
