Ok... so WindowsXP is generally reliable for me. Not this time.

Trying to run the Windows Update site - and I got these two issues when installing critical updates.... they continued to happen several times when I tried to re-download/install them (still no luck getting it to work... hence this post).

Excuse the high-compression on the JPEGs. Thought I'd save on space.


So.. software on the Windows Update site hasnt passed MS Logo testing? Right....


And the conclusion... only one update installed correctly - the others won't.

Does anyone have any thoughts? Something I changed? Am running Windows XP with SP 1.

hmm, i'd say it was microsoft's end of the thing, it's their update, it should pass their "logo" testing.

i think you can download the updates as a self-extracting kit, so you can update it at your liesure.

Go to Control panel > Administrative tools > Services > double click on "Cryptographic services" > Ensure that it's set on automatic start and is in fact running.

Also check for Windows event logs to see if there are any services failing to start. Event logs are in Administrative tools.

It seems like Microsoft is having problems with its update system. I just had 5 updates fail to install. I didn’t get a “windows logo” error they just didn’t install. Try checking Microsoft’s web site. I am sure other people must be having this problem as well.

Win98SE just yelled it wanted to update, so me, reading the reg and knowing something big was coming for weeks, went to windows update, but found zilch updates for me to install.

Turns out I'd disabled Cryptographic services when I first installed Windows XP (though after I'd installed all the critical updates of the time)... thanks for all your help but this solved the entire problem - everything installed fine first time.

That reminds me of my old cd burner. Installed it, installed the drivers, and XP tells me: those drivers might compromize the stability of the system, so they're turned off ( or something like that ). And what if I wanted to try and see if it really makes things unstable ( and obviously, I wanted )?

98SE is only on there because I am not running XP on a 192MB box.

She's fully patched, and I run daily scans. As for the crashes, well, even XP crashes once a week, and the 98SE box is behaving itsself lately. Only a few more months till we switch....
