Freak, what command line options are you using?
I'm not exactly sure - it's difficult to say by that low-res screenshot you posted - but it seems to me at least that you might not be using -spec and -env (and you might also want to enable alpha env mapping, too). That is one reason why the cocpit glass could look that transparent. Other is that it looks like that just by chance, because there's nothing to reflect...
I'm just asking because my Apollo's cockpit glass looks about this:
]You can see the stars and nebulae reflecting from the glass. The only edit I gave this one was crop it a bit to reduce the image size a bit, and the empty sky wasn't relevant. This was the command line I use:
C:\Pelit\Freespace2_SCP\fs2_open_369_RC6.exe -mod fsport,mediavp368zeta -spec -glow -env -jpgtga -mipmap -nomotiondebris -2d_poof -noscalevid -missile_lighting -img2dds -cache_bitmaps -dualscanlines -targetinfo -orbradar -rearm_timer -ballistic_gauge -ship_choice_3d -3dwarp -warp_flash -snd_preload -alpha_env -fps -ambient_factor 18.3 -spec_exp 16.7 -spec_point 0.6 -spec_static 0.9 -spec_tube 18
Oh, and just to keep the topic in rails, something little born from playing with beams...
High Noon!

GTVA Colossus giving one of their best pilots a close shave...

And finally, GVD Psamtic beaming the living daylights out of NTC Belisarius.

The beams are by no means ready for large-scale use yet, there's a lot of work needed to be done with them, but I have an idea which I'll try some day this week...
