Should I read the book? I want to, but I'm worried it will spoil the film, which will obviously rape it...

The Asimov book has pretty much nothing to do with the film.

that car was cool, and they did away with conventional wheels. the overall movie was ok and will smith was his usual self.

It'll spoil the movie as much as the Starship troopers book would spoil Verhoeven's version :p

I was suprised in my podunk town of 2000 people or so, with a movie theater as old as the town itself actually got this film the day it was released to all theaters.  I would say it's a fairly good movie, storywise.  It was funny to see USR as the leader in robotics...  But there were some interesting CG shots in that film.  Some of the camera movements threw me for a loop, literally.  This film didnt really have a ton of the Will Smith humor you'd find in the Men In Black movies, which was a relief.
I wonder if microsoft got sucked up by USR, who wrote the software for the robots...:nervous:
The credits quoted the movie was inspired by the Asimov book too, so I'm sure the book will be a good read.

It's not good. It's okay.

It has no relation to the original book other than the fact that one of characters has the same name (she's completely different in every other respect) and the three laws of robotics are in it (but the three laws are now a sci-fi staple and are used in plenty of non-asimov settings).

I found the film a little predictable to be honest. But it's a mildly entertaining diversion for a couple of hours and the robots themselves are quite nicely done.

I haven't seen it yet, but it looked to me like they went overboard with the robots.  It seems like they could make a pretty good movie with just one or two angry robots rather than swarms of 'em.

They needed lots of robots for the direction the movie took but yeah a one or two buggy robots would have been a much better movie.

Well, I just saw it and in a sense, its pretty good. Difference of opinion I think.

In a sense, it does has some relation to the book - both deal with the 3 laws, and most importantly - the zeroeth law. In the books, the robots were succesfull in implementing it; in the movie, it was the exact opposite. But yet, in both, the distinctive line between the human and the machines is blurred even more.

Im going to see this next weekend. I hear people who like futuristic movies will enjoy it while others wont be pleased at all.
