Freespace - Movie Material?
I think this is pretty self-explanatory: does Freespace have what it takes to be made into a movie?

Though I'm sure no one expects it to be.
Derek Smart is his own oxymoron.

If they made a movie of Freespace, most people would walk out of the theater and say, "I hope they make a game out of that!"

It will be dumb to base the story on Freespace pilot view.
it will be rather cool to do what starship trooper did...

There's intelligence in freespace?  i thought we just blew everything all to hell.

ok seriously....i think that done right....FS1 alone is a great story and basis for a movie or mini series....preferably mini series.  After that....do FS2...say release them a year apart....and then finally...the finale....shameless pimp time....release Machina Terra....the Movie.

The Irony of his nick is that i was going to name one of the Pilots in MT that. Ford "Prefect" Adams.  prefect being his call sign, just to see if anyone would pick up on it.

Freespace - Movie Material?
NO.

Freespace series lacks
A) drama ("ZOMG Alpha 1 is going to do stuff all by himself, whoa!")
B) interesting characters ("Hey I am an anecdotal dude with no identity!")
C) original plot ("The ancient prophecies are true. The Great Darkness comes, and we're all GOING TO DIE.")
D) Depth. ("ZOMG, huge insects killing us all, let's develop some überfighters! Oh, and we had a 14-year war, guess it's OK to just drop it, right guys?")

Really, there's movies and there's computer games. You could make a decent movie out of Beneath a Steel Sky, but Freespace?

No. And this does not mean that I'm not a fan, just that I think the game lacks most of aspects of a good game. Now, let it be more political plot, with focus on commanders, well, maybe then.

See, Wing Commander The Movie for reference. Then think if you would like to see your favourite movie raped into unconsciouness.
lol wtf

Well you don't make the movie exactly how the game goes. The screenplay writer would have to take some liberties. Expand upon the basis. Freespace 1's plot is thin, but that allows for great creativity for the filmmaker.

If anything I'd make it into a miniseries based around the Galatea and her crew while following them through the end of the Terran-Vasudan War. Then, when the Galatea is destroyed by the Lucifer, the surviving crew is transferred to the Bastion and pick up from there to the destruction of the Sol node.

I would make it a tear-jerking teen drama.

Freespace - Movie Material?
Freespace the movie has potential, but you'll have to base it not on alpha 1, but the events that went around him (like in the interval before Alpha wing arrived and Bosch escapes, or with Kappa wing, or even other intel recon teams that went in against the Shivans and the NTF), which bring limitless possibilities to the plot. Similar to what Opposing Force did to HL, it was based on Half-life, had all the references to Freeman, yet it was about the events surrounding the man as opposed to being the person itself.

Freespace - Movie Material?
no, because it'll just be a mindless action movie. that is, unless they fill in the plot a great deal. you'd have to make a cast of characters, and a story involving them outside of the whole war thing.

I agree, the plot would need to be filled in a great deal.  Use a cast of characters that seemingly have nothing to do with each other....except for the shivan threat...and have them all intertwined by the end of the movie.  only 1 can be a fighter pilot though.  The other piloits are minor characters.
