One of the batteries inside my mouse (Logitech Mouseman Optical) just exploded, the battery acid spread all over its interior. Furthermore, the acid had the opinion that eating up those control chips and conductors would be really cool.

To cut a long story short : can any of you recommend a particular optical cordless mouse at a reasonable price?

The Logitech MX700 is often regarded as one of the best wireless optical mice out there, at about 50 USD. There is also the MX900, which is about 80. And of course, there's the Wireless Intellimouse Explorer, which is about 40.

Personally, I'd go for the MX700.  Damn thing has a cradle to recharge the sucker.

And why not just use a bog-standard £2 corded ball mouse.
That way you don't have to shell out when it breaks. Which it's unlikely to, as it's simple.

I've had the same el-cheapo mouse for about 4 years.

Petrach : well, the answer is very simple : cos I don't like them. A mouse must be comfortable, heavy, feature precise aiming and sized just about a handful - and those cheap ones certainly aren't.

To the others : well, thanks for your input. I think I'll go to the nearest computer shop and check some prices.

Actually, it was probably either about her weight or some general "you-just-don't-understand-me" stuff.  

I shouldn't wonder my mouse commited suicide.

I have only one wireless mouse, sitting unused in my shelf. I don't use it because I learned that mices with cord are still more practical than cordless ones. This is why I have bought one Logitech MX500 and two MX310's since then.

When it's a matter of what you can and can't afford, rather than what you do and don't like, it's amazing what you'll start liking.

Mr. Fury : why in particular do you find wired mice more practical? I can't really see that. They're cheaper, yes, they may live longer, but more practical?

Petrarch : well, that's true, but since I CAN afford a little more than a 2€ mouse, I do not intend to come to like those. BTW, guess what I'm using right now...good old Logitech Pilot Wheelmouse.

Batteries wear out sooner or later, rechargeable or not.

Corded mice are more practical because a) they are cheaper, b) they are more precise, c) they don't have issues with line-of-sight with their base (unless you're shelling out for a bluetooth mouse, that is; the whole line-of-sight thing just wouldn't work for me) and d) they don't go to sleep on you after 2 minutes of inactivity.  Plus keeping cordless mice recharged is just one more thing to remember.  Not factoring in price at all, I'll take a good corded optical mouse over a wireless one any day.

I rather like the MX310, myself. It's a nice step up from the cheap opticals, but cheaper than the expensive lines, and competent for everything I need from it.

Line-of-sight? Uh? I have never needed to put my mouse in line-of-sight with the base connector - the thing's below my desk. No problems.
Concerning precision : my (deceased) home mouse was the same as the one at work, just with the difference that the latter is a corded version. No differences in precision. Nada. I've heard of several issues on that part from Microsoft Intellipoint mice - maybe that's what you base your opinion on.
For the sleep mode : did you have issues with waking up the mouse? This may also vary between models, mine "woke up" intially when it was needed. No noticable delay there.

BTW, I bought a used mouse off ebay for a few € - hope it arrives soon. Same as before, just a different colour. I hope that it won't be murdered by some revolting battery again...

The thing about logitech wireless mice (I'm not sure about the MS non-bluetooth ones since I've never touched one.) is that they use RF so its not a matter of line of site as it is a matter of ammount of penetration of matter.  Its the same thing with 802.11 networks.
