New PC (once I find the money)
Hi,

I'm desperately in need of a new PC in order to play Babylon Project R3 :thepimp: . I have priced up a machine below and I'm interested in knowing if anyone can beat what I already have or has any particular comments on the components I'm looking at:

  35.24  Chieftec BX-02B-B-SL
17.62  E-Buyer's own 500w Power Supply Silver With Dual Fans
122.97  P4C800-E Deluxe (intel 875p chipset)
147.98  Intel Pentium 4 Northwood 3.0GHZ 800FSB
  10.57  Thermaltake A1715 Spark 7 Cooler
  64.03  Corsair 2 x 256MB sticks, DDR400 / PC3200, non-ECC,
166.56  128Mb Excalibur (HiS) Radeon 9800Pro Ice-Q Platinum
20.00  a sound card. Dunno. Don't want to spend >20
520.94

My priorities for this system are 1) trouble free computing (I've owned a PC Chips motherboard for 7 years and I don't want any more hassle), 2) gaming / 3d speed, 3) quiet and cool. I don't want to spend any more than 520.

Do you really need a computer of this kind to play Babylon 5? ;)

You'd be better off with an Athlon 64 system, cheaper and more performance in the long run. And make it either 1x 512 Mb or 2x 512 Mb of RAM. Don't get 256 Mb sticks, you will risk running out of memory slots. Using third memory slot in P4 system is not an issue because of low memory bandwidth, but using third in AMD system is not recommended. And get an Audigy 2 if you want 3D sounds. If not, stick with integrated audio.

47.51 Ebuyer 512 DDR400 PC3200 Extra Value Ram
166.56 128Mb Excalibur (HiS) Radeon 9800Pro Ice-Q Platinum
20.00 a sound card. Dunno. Don't want to spend >20

I'm getting a AMD 64 system soon, but my dad is apying for mobo, pro, 80 gig HD, screen, case, PSU, and that kind of stuff. I pay for another 512 stick, giving me a gig of RAM, and a Radeon 9800 128MB.

Mind you, that's costing me 250 euro's, which is quite a bit for me. The entire system is about 1500 euro's, but that's including screen and my additions.

What's all of the fuss over the 64 bit systems?  Future-proofing?  With less than 2 gigs of ram, the extra 32 bits of memory addressing would be completely useless.

Indeed, I'am gonna upgrade my P4 3.2 GHZ to 64_bit CPU
when it's needed more (Longhorn and things like that comes)

and I think my setup(P4 3.2, 3gb ram, Radeon 9800XT) is good enough for few years I hope

that is nice setup btw IP:)

Lucky for us, A64's price has been dropping tremendously in the last couple days.
I finally destoryed the Shivan armada and all I got was this lousy T shirt.

Because Prescott is useless, so people are looking to the Newcastle-based Athlon 64s for their new computers. Also, 64-bit is really good for marketing. It also allows some calculations to work faster.

And I might be upgrading to more then 2 gigs once the price drops.

Mind you, that'll take some time, especially since 2/3 banks are taking with the 512 sticks, buts still.

The 2800+ model (512kb L2 Cache, 1.8GHz, single channel memory) is at 155 USD. And the 3500+ (512kb L2 cache, 2.2GHz, dual channel memory) is at 352 USD. Those are decent price drops.
