Warped vinyl records
OK, I'm recording my parents record collection onto CD's, but some of the Joni Mitchell records got warped during some leak quite a bit of time ago. The result is something like a constant doppler effect, with the tones going up and down all the time. Now I'm pretty sure it's not the way the music intended, so I'm looking at filtering this out.

Any options?

I have a version of Cool Edit 2000 ready, but I don't know how to use anything but cut/paste and record.

Download from Kazaa/e-Donkey etc.

Perfectly legal if you own the record.

Anyone got some mp3's from Joni Mitchell's Clouds album?

I tried downloading Joni Mitchell songs before, but it isn't popular music any more, so it's extremely hard to get.

Oh, LPs? That's pretty cool. Sorry, I know how to handle audio-cassette -> MP3, but not vinyl -> MP3. ;)

If the distortion is fairly constant, you should be able to use a flanger or something to fix it. Goldwave is your friend.

Well, since the records are in a spiral (duh) the distortion isn't that constant. Sure, you can make a formula or something for it, but it's not linear.

Try using the pitch bender of Cool Edit (think setting it to zero might make the entire thing play using the same pitch).

Well, that's my audio-happy friend telling what to do...

Yeah...that's me. Anyway, to get your vinyl's to .wav, download this: http://www.cfbsoftware.com/lpripper/lpripper.htm
I haven't tried it because I don't have any LP's to try it on...
Now then. After you got them into .wav files, open them in Cool Edit. Make sure you're in the waveform editor. Now go to Effects > Time/Pitch > Pitch Bender. Click Flat and Zero Ends.
I'm not 100% sure that this will work but it doesn't hurt to try. :)

There is no easy way to remove that warble without investing in some seriously industrial grade software.

However with Cool Edit or SoundForge and some plugins you might be able to reduce it to something acceptible, but it will be very time consuming; Frankly the easiest thing to do would be to either buy a CD of it or just download some MP3s that someone's already made :(

you shoulkd have seen some of the records my grandma had. old but well perserved. some actually had decent sound quality too. i used an analog line in port on my sound blaster extigy. that way i managed to used the eax audio enhancer thing to filter out the clicky sound, then imported it into sound forge for further editing such as adding fade ins and removing the pause between tracks and finally cutting it up into wave files for burning.actually some turntables (recent models or dj tables) are designed to actually compensate for record warp effects my varying rotational speed based on the pitch of the needle arm.

but hey, if anyone needs jhonny hortons greatest hits, let me know. somebody needs to do a death metal version of sink the bismark.

I'm recording in cool edit, cutting it up in tracks, burning, and storing in MP3.  I'll try that function next time I get into my fathers room to do some recording. (He's the only one with a pick-up)
