I wish I had some kind of answer for this, but I don't. The wierd bit is, looking at him, he doesn't strike me as the type who would have trouble getting girlfriends of his own age. Am I misunserstanging the article, because it says the sex was consentual. Yes, a 12 year old is not really ready to make those sorts of decisions yet, but its still not as bad as rape. In some countries, the age of consent is 14, which means she wasn't that far below what could be considered the maturity standard.

In some states there are laws that make for considerably less punishment for cases where age is the only factor making sex non-consentual.
For example in my state if a child under 18 has sex and the only thing keeping the child from consenting is age then it is not rape as long as the older person is within 3 years of the child (It is possible for both parties to be charged with delinquency, but that's a fairly minor crime).

A law like that wouldn't affect this case (ages too far apart), but I think in this case it's an adult taking advantage of a child and the punishment for rape is appropriate.
