Can they be saved? Unlikely. I just hope the retaliation is as disproportionate as possible. Maybe this is what needed to happen to solve the Chechen problem for good.
One mans terrorist is another man's freedom figher. Its what big armies call little armies when the little armies commit the same attrocities that the big armies comit day after day. Countless liberation movements have employed terrorist means because quite simply they are the most effective. Yes, its regretable, and no, I don't condone it, but its not like they can just ask politely.
People are dying, both Chechens and Russians, because Russia refuses to withdraw its troops and end the occupation.
