Unfortunately, yeah, it is the only thing they understand.  I've said it before and I'll say it again: you cannot negotiate with a terrorist.  There is no such thing as a legitimate demand when you set up explosives in a school.  When kids are involved, all bets are off.

Can they be saved?  Unlikely.  I just hope the retaliation is as disproportionate as possible.  Maybe this is what needed to happen to solve the Chechen problem for good.

I suspect Putin will make a statement along the lines of 'We will fight terrorism regardless of the cost' followed by Gas attack/Army moving in. Them that survive get a free ticket home

One mans terrorist is another man's freedom figher. Its what big armies call little armies when the little armies commit the same attrocities that the big armies comit day after day. Countless liberation movements have employed terrorist means because quite simply they are the most effective. Yes, its regretable, and no, I don't condone it, but its not like they can just ask politely.

People are dying, both Chechens and Russians, because Russia refuses to withdraw its troops and end the occupation.

People are dying because that's what the Chechens truly want for themselves.  The only reason Russia won't do what they have to do is the whole world would cry about it.  Two solutions, Russia leaves completely or the Russian army chases/kills every man, woman, and child (yes, child) out of the country.  That's it.   Seeing as it's been made clear the Chechens don't give a crap who they put in harms way, screw the whole lot of them.   Harsh, you bet.  Shoulda thoughta that before you took over a school.  Bad move.

FFS, don't be so stupid as to confuse the Chechen people - or even the Chechen speratists-  with a group of Islamic fundamentalists.  Not every Chechen rebel is a suicide bomber, not every one wants to live in a Muslim theocracy as these terrorists do.
