Well worth it then, although if your mom is balking at the price, you could see if they have slower, less expensive connections.

What a load of horse crap.  Sometimes I really like living so close to one of the tech capitals of the world.

In my area, Comcast has a monopoly on cable, so they have just cranked up the price....again. It's now $45 per month if you also have digital cable, $55 per month if you do not also have digital cable.
"The reason for this is that the original Fortran got so convoluted and extensive (10's of millions of lines of code) that no-one can actually figure out how it works, there's a massive project going on to decode the original Fortran and write a more modern system, but until then, the UK communication network is actually relying heavily on 35 year old Fortran that nobody understands." - Flipside

Comcast in Nashville sucks...it has a nasty habit of turning off periodically, it's just unstable. Of course the only other alternative is hi-speed through the phone-line which is more expensive if I recall correctly.

DSL? In most places, it'll be between 30 and 45 USD.

Have they fixed the range issue though?  Used to, you had to be within something like 3 miles from the central office to be able to get DSL.  Have they figured out how to fix it?

Kind of moot for Hippo though, his DSL provider says his lines are too old.

Yeah, i have like, 16 gauge phone line, and they can't transmit reliably on more then 12guage? I'm like, "WTF? You calling my phone lines too BIG for you?"... To change, we'd have to rerun the lines throught the house... and then there's a lot of people on my street on DSL, so i wouldn't expect much... A friend only gets 11kbs on it, and i get more than that with AOL once i fiddle with MTU's... I'm actually averaging 15kbs on my old desktop... I have't been able to replicate yet though...

16 guage wire is smaller than 12 guage.

12 guage wire is what you find in your walls primarily except in heavier circuits where most contractors use 10 guage unless code calls for something heavier.

What's weird is most phone line is 18 guage, some older houses even have 21 guage.

Also, DSL is a dedicated connection. You don't share bandwidth with other people around you like you do with Cable.

Its the exact opposite here... The more people using DSL in your area at once, the slower it is... Its true, i've seen it... Cable here s a solod speed...

The cable is a solid speed because there probably aren't enough people on a node to cause saturation.  The DSL slow down is probably because the server is being flooded in the late afternoon when everybody gets home from work and goes to check their email/forums/pr0n ;7
