What is YOUR favorite type of mission, and why?
As i'm currently designing mission 16 for my campaign, and I just noticed that the way I executed mission 15, there are many, many ways I can do mission 16.

That, and my natural curiousity has gotten the best of me.

So, what is your favorite type of mission?

As long as it doesn't involve defending a Big Pansy Target from Crap Loads Of Bombers, then I'm game for anything :)

I've always liked being part of a big fur-ball in the middle of a cap-ship fleet battle 'tho :D

Bombing the crap out of capships or long-range interception in an Ares loaded with trees always appeals to me as well 'tho ;)
(*sob* Okay I admit it! I liked those B-campaigns! :p)

Hey, just because it tis a huge battle involving capital ships, doesn't mean it is a BoE, or a B-Campaign. They can be done right.

But you're right, Cyker, those are my favorite, too. Being in the midst of a huge, un-godly, vicious, to-end-all battle of doom is incredibly fun...and immersive.

Heavy assault gets a vote from me, too.  Defense missions leave you worrying too much about whatever ship you have to babysit for you to actually have any fun.  Intercept missions are fast-paced, but much like pure defense, you spend too much time shooting down bombs and not dogfighting.  Bombing runs can be fun, but bombers themselves are generally sluggish, making it abnormally hard to avoid your target's defenses, or enemy interceptors.

For good examples of classic heavy assault, check out Hellfire and Secrets Revealed (sort of) (Silent Threat), A Lion at the Door and Into the Lion's Den (FS2), and Small Deadly Space, The Darkness and the Light, La Ruota Della Fortuna, and Reaching the Zenith (FS1).
We have returned to continue our purification of this galaxy. It is again your turn to be crushed beneath the great force that is the Antaran army. All your petty squabbling with the other beings in this galaxy is meaningless. The Antaran fleet will destroy you all, one by one. You may not surrender. You cannot win. Your only option is death.

Same as Singh

EDIT: And by the way, if you're going to do an escort mission, please make sure that none of the incoming fighters and/or bombers are carrying Trebuchets, otherwise I can almost garentee it will be nearly impossible to beat.

"The reason for this is that the original Fortran got so convoluted and extensive (10's of millions of lines of code) that no-one can actually figure out how it works, there's a massive project going on to decode the original Fortran and write a more modern system, but until then, the UK communication network is actually relying heavily on 35 year old Fortran that nobody understands." - Flipside

The only mission type's I didnt like was asteroid shooting, stuff that you cant influence, missions where you are super Alpha 1 and scanning missions(I never liked em "fly here, stop.  Fly here, stop" etc.)

Assault or Escort missions. Assault mission if I do not have to defend anything but myself and Escort if I have to fight alongside with a destroyer or a corvette.

I already announced my retirement twice, yet here I am. If I bring up that topic again, don't believe a word.

What is YOUR favorite type of mission, and why?
Escorting a convoy of thin-skinned freighters and transports, with maybe a friendly cruiser or two thrown in.

Basically, if you don't do your job, those freighters are toast.  If one or two bombs get through... BOOM!  If you let those pesky enemy fighters have a run of the mill... BOOM!

Don't need big capital ships to keep you busy, although throwing in an enemy cruiser or corvette also adds to the nuttiness.

I like the idea that in escort missions that if an enemy cruiser turns up, it shouldnt be Alpha's job to deal with it.  Command if it were smart (which lets face, is more deadly to the GTVA than the Shivans) they would deploy something to deal with it (or cruiser escort goes intercept).  Even if all the player had to do was get the main beam on the ship.

Though none of this is really related.  Hmm more of a rant really.
Perhaps I should shut up?

I'm a bomber pilot at heart, I suppose, although the rather odd truth is that I kinda like dogfighting in a bomber; maybe it's feeling of security that comes from having heavy shields. Well, except the Ursa. I could like the Ursa, even, if it weren't for the arrangement of its guns. I have a few missions that I've made (which threaten to turn into a campaign) where you play as part of a scout-bomber squadron and have to do your own dogfighting in addition to bombing runs against various targets.

But some of my favorite missions are ones that change type or are mixed. It's an assault mission, but you're flying close escort for a capital ship while other squadrons and the capship do the assaulting part, or it starts as an assault mission but becomes an escort one when Command decides to capture that capship you just disabled.

Anything that includes taking down fast and deadly fighters is fun. I just love chasing enemy fighters and engaging in fast paced dogfights.

But since you ask for "type of mission", my answer will be: "B.R. type" mission. :D

Huge dogfights are fun. With the power of SCP, you can have up to 120 fighters (I think). Tis like a BoE, except with FIGHTERS! And the player actually has an effect in the battle.

Good choice, Lightspeed. Those are my favorite, too.
