Subspace Question (Knossos closure)
Hi everyone; I'm new to this forum so sorry if this is a stupid question that is asked frequently.

Is there any way to close a Knossos portal within a short amount of time? (i.e. a few seconds) Although natural jump nodes can be collapsed by detonating explosives inside the portal, I'm not sure if the same applies for Knossos-based subspace routes. While the GTVA's attempt at destroying the Knossos portal in sm2-10.fs2 failed, it seems that they actually destroyed the portal itself rather than attempt to explode the Meson warheads inside the subspace "path." Could the portal have been closed quickly (like a standard jump node) if the bombs were used inside the subspace route or would this have made no difference?

I am currently working on a small campaign for FS2 and I'm sort of undecided on whether to use a standard jump node or a Knossos device in a part of the storyline. Although the Knossos would make more sense, I don't really know a lot about how it works and if it can be closed quickly or not.

Thanks in advance.

Everybody makes their material up...

Anyway, yes, this would work PROVIDED the Knossos itself was destroyed first. Since it's job is to stabilize the node, it would theoretically keep it stable even if the node was Meson disrupted, unless it was taken out of comission, whereupon the node would act as any other jump node does.

I'm right.
You're wrong.

That make sense; thanks.

I would say that if the portal AND something inside it's vortex was destroyed at the same time, or near the same time, then the portal would be destabilized.

But I doubt that it would prevent shivans to go through anyway. I'm pretty sure that if they wanted, they could even go through the capella jump node, coz they seems to be able to use about any existing mode (impossible lucifer jump in FS1 to avoid the GTA and PVF blockades, last cutscene monologue...)

Here's something interesting to think about: How did the GTVA get back in the Knossos once they destroyed it? How did they know exactly where the jump hole was located without the actual portal marking the position?

The subspace nodes are purely computer generated representations of where the node is, the node itself, being like any other node, would show up on sensors fine.

But the question is: Does it act the same for the Knossos?

There's the question of course, why our ship's computer didn't show a node around a Knossos like it technically should have. I suppose it can discriminate between nodes it shows and displays - hey, there's an idea, someone tampering with ship computers so that they can't see the nodes, and can't jump out. Oooooh, mission idea coming on...

It's simply an unstable node that's been stabilized.  No reason for it to not show up.  And IIRC, on the nebula side, it had a normal node.

Well, until the Knossos was gone, it was not a normal node. Who knows how specific a shipboard computer is?

I realized that.

I guess the subspace capabilities of any type of warp hole are the same then...

I guess I will just put computer-generated jump node markers in along with Knossos portals in my missions then. It is reasonable to assume that the GTVA upgraded their fighters' computers to show Knossos portals sometime after the FS2 campaign.

subspace from the knossos (at least the warp sequence) is different, the ani used is a brighter blue, so there must be some kind of difference.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. Heh heh. You guys have no idea how much I was panicking when I found out I couldn't jump out in Playing Judas. Manticores to the left of me, Manticores to the right - okay, so maybe you do have an idea.

it's a FS1 mission, the one where you fly a dragon and have to scan all the shivan ships, and eventually the licifer shows up while she was expected somewhere else.
