Confirmed Changes in Star Wars DVDs
I was in the supermarket earlier today, and saw a copy of a magazine with Star Wars on the cover (I believe it was Entertainment Weekly). Skimming the article, I found these confirmed changes:
1. Greedo still shoots first, but they altered something about what Han does. The rationale is that Lucas doesn't think of Han as a murderer or something stupid along those lines.
2. Those pictures floating around the web of the modified Yoda/Anakin/Obi-Wan scene are real, but the original actor is still found when the mask is removed a scene or two earlier.
3. The Gungans have invaded the RotJ end scene, leading to the two most annoying races in Star Wars being present within the same movie.
You see things; and you say "Why?" But I dream things that never were; and I say "Why not?" -George Bernard Shaw

Well, most of that stuff isn't that bad... except the Han - Greedo thing. :doubt:

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

you'd think they would have seen the negative reaction to it in 1997, and then 7 years later would have jumped at the chance to finally undo the damage, but alas.

Really...:blah:

I've always thought that Han was a tough-as-nails hardcase that will almost anything for money.  The kind of guy that you expect to find in the service of a mobster like Jaba willingly.

By having Greedo fire first, Lucas takes away the foreshadow that anyone is redeemable and thus even Vader might be saved.

It's ironic. I find myself nodding my head at Ian McDiarmid's insertion into empire, but grimacing at Haden Christianson's insertion into Jedi, even though logically, it makes sense.

The Gungans and naboo are passable I suppose, though the insertion of the Jedi temple into coruscant doesn't make a lot of sense (surely the emperor would have destroyed it?). The altering of the script on the tractor beam shouldn't have been neccesary in the first place, so that's a good thing.

Only thing I'm not sure about is Jabba. He's never looked real in that scene, and the scenes on the site seem to indicate he now looks different, but not neccesarily better. It's the sort of thing you have to see in motion.

Oh no... Not the eyebrows!!!! :eek2:

But seriously, I'm not too flustered about the changes. Most of them are cosmetic. I preffer the new jabba in this edition than in the last. However I still disagree with the whole greedo shooting first. It just doesent work. It takes away from Han's character and it just looks stupid. Gungans in ROTJ, no problem. Brings the first 3 episodes in nicely. Hayden as a ghost... Hmmm. Thats a toughie. I always like how they had some totally unknown actor who you've never seen before as Vader in the end, because then you finally put a face to the bad guy and see that he's a nice old man. But now... He comes back as a young guy. While the others are old. Dunno. I'll have to see it, and see how it feels.

Oh well, Gonna buy it. Then I'll buy the Limited über-special directors extended cut edition grand slam turkey fry platinum plated fan stomping 9 Disc major mojo Star Wars Saga collection DVD set. Which of course will have a whole slew of other changes.

I'm with you, aldo.  He's the singularly worst actor I've ever seen in a movie.  And why the heck would they add him into that scene?  After however many years since Episode 2, he still looks exactly the same.  He's supposed to look middle-aged at that point.  Can't Lucas just leave well enough alone and keep the movies as they were released?  I love how he's changing them to fit in with those two pieces of flying crap that he called Episodes 1 and 2; shouldn't they have fit in with the existing movies?  No, thanks; I'm sticking to my VHS copy of the original theatrical version.  I'll just copy it to DVD.

I would have no problem with the dvds. the only exception is the the changes at the celebration.
I also heard they added more ewoks to endor and more of their fluffy little asses get killed.
Their are rumors that naboo starfighters are supposed to be in episode IV.

Their is also suposedly a scene where the Senate is being disolved.

I've been amazed and dismayed at people's reactions to the DVD releases.  The guy has said over and over again that he wasn't pleased with how Episode IV came out, so he made some changes.  I think they are great.  Greedo, Jabba, whatever.  It's fun to watch those films and pretend I'm 5 years old again.

I just wish Episode I had taken place on Alderaan instead of making up a new planet called Naboo... then I could celebrate the death of the entire Gungan species at the hands of Tarkin in Episode IV.

And did you notice that Jedi spends more time lingering over the death of a single Ewok than over the millions of Imperial contractors killed on the Death Star? Lousy rebels...
