Pulse weapon experimentation...
The file:  pulsebolt.rar

[EDIT] Some of you apparently are lacking the thruster02-01(a).tga through thruster02-03(a).tga files, for whatever reason.  I've retouched them and dropped them in the new archive; just drop them into the /data/effects folder and replace the weapons.tbl entries with the ones provided. [/EDIT]

The old file:  newpulse2.zip

What you need:
* Most any recent SCP build should suffice.
* The media VP and whatever separate releases of Lighty's weapons fx there might be.

What we've got here are four pulse-type weapons that I designed after studying how Lighty got the effects for his weapon effects upgrades working.  After a bit of trial and error getting my own variant of the tbl code to behave, I finally have the visual effects I was looking for, for the most part.

So, drop these four entries into your weapons.tbl (or make it a .tbm, though I haven't the foggiest as to how to get one of those things to work), and make a mission, replacing the default armaments on some of the turrets with these. (or hack these into a pre-existing one)

Feedback on their appearance is what I'm looking for right now.  Balance and all that is a moot point since these are simply built for aesthetic purposes; damage properties can be quite easily altered to suit whatever mod these might be selected for.

Now, you're probably wondering why I didn't just provide screenshots.  Well, the thing is, I tried taking a screencap (several, in fact) but either 1) the .ani particles didn't show up, or 2) the entire weapon effect failed to render in the shot.

Aside from Lynx's wonderful definition, it's basically what the plasma weapons were in FS2. I.e. THe laser bolts, and anything else that wasn't a projectile or beam weapon.

Wouldn't a pulse cannon infer that it is very powerful but that it has to pulse it's fire to a short duration to keep from over loading?  The warship secondary cannons have never been what you would refer to a powerful.  Though they do get lucky sometimes and take out a bomb.

So someones claiming they invented turrets that were in from fs1? what is this? the US patent office? ;)

Or more likely this is an experiment that uses existing pulse turrets...

He is experimenting with Lightspeed’s weapon effects to create a different look for capital ship lasers.

JC:  Those lasers look interesting.  One way to take a good screen shot of them would be to slow them down, they move to fast for it.

Jon:  I tried that, and it didn't render them properly. (i.e. didn't render the .ani trail; sometimes didn't render the projectile proper, either)  Then again, since I've reinstalled windows most of my stuff's been acting rather unpredictably.  I'll poke around a bit more, see what I can do.

Mmkay, I think there was a bandwidth overrun or something.

Though the odd thing is, it's rejecting my login attempts...very peculiar.

I got a chance to look at these a little more and I have a question for you. Which thruster effects are you using? I am using the Bobboau/Lightspeed hybrids. While the Blue, Green, and Yellow lasers look pretty good, the Red laser looks like red gas is being vented at the target.

Actually...now that I think about it I don't recall which one these are from. :o  Source textures are from the fs2_open356.vp file...appears I haven't been keeping up with the latest releases.

What the Red one should have at its core is a double-plumed texture.  Though, without a visual to help me out, it's difficult to extrapolate what you're seeing when we (apparently) have different media vps.

If you feel so inclined, feel free to modify the speed of the projectiles so you can capture screenshots of them, and by all means post them. :)

[EDIT] And on a side note, the ftp's back up and running, so you can download it at your leisure. [/EDIT]

Well, reverting to an older build, I managed to catch a few screenshots of them.  Slowing them down did a marvelous job of screwing with the particle trails, however, so I left them at their normal speed (1000.0) and managed to catch them as they whizzed by.

Apologies for the craptastic quality.  Also, I'm thinking I'll have to fix the 'head' of the bolt, as they are designed as thrusters first and foremost, and that abrupt cutoff looks :ick: on a laser. (especially noticeable on the red bolts)  And for those gaps in the particle trails:  that's a result of the pause while saving the image, I guess.  Normally that shouldn't happen.

Anyways, the lineup goes:

Oh, and before anyone starts *****ing about the X, do remember that I've got only limited bandwidth, so you've probably exhausted my allotted amount.

Heh. When I saw the first post I thought the Pulse Lasers were out of Mechwarrior 3 or something.

But I am only using origonal 3.6 so I better track down the files you mentioned... I do not like how they look now but the effect is cool! Are these slated for any particular campaign? I'd like to adopt these As PDL's (Pulse Defense Lasers) for Yamato. I tired all colors but I think in the series they were blue as well as the main cannons (got to watch some more).. L8tr!

wow you used an older build texture but they look 10 times better??? How can I get them to look that good? Or had you played with the table entry before posting?
