Not sure which to upgrade

My laptop is currently a 2.4 GHz P4, 30 GB HDD, 384 MB RAM, and a Radeon 7500 16 MB video card.

I want to upgrade the hard drive, the memory, and the video card. Unfortunatly, I only have enough money for one of them. I'm not sure which to choose. Any suggestions?

The ram... (If possible)

Then the Vid card (if not integrated)...

Then the hard drive... (again, if not integrated, or inaccessable)...


Though you'd be better off just getting a new laptop...

I don't have anywhere close to enough money for a good new laptop. :p

What do you use your laptop for? What OS does it use?
I finally destoryed the Shivan armada and all I got was this lousy T shirt.

i doubt you can upgrade your video

your ram and harddrive should be trivial to upgrade

depends on whether its integrated or not... When i got mine, i made sure that essential things weren't integrated... Hence why i can pop my hard drive or cd drive just by sliding a little latch... (so long as the computer's off :p )... Other stuff, while internal, is removeable, but just requires a little more work...

XP Pro. I use it for everything. Web surfing, gaming, homework.

I checked, it actually IS possible to upgrade my video. Unfortunatly, it is not a standard card so I have to buy it from Dell. I can only upgrade to a Radeon 9000 64 MB card for my model of laptop, but that still is so much better than what I have right now.

It's better than most companies. Most laptops have a video that is not only proprietary but also unupgradable. Please examine your facts a little more closely.


Granted, I still would not buy a desktop from them, only laptops.

Well, that won't be a problem soon, as it seems nVidia's MXM standard is catching on with laptop vendors...

I've seen lots of laptops with unintegrated cards come from a lot of companies. Gateway for instance, is one. Dell in general though, makes people HAVE to go through them for upgrades, and repairs. My friend had an inspiron 1100. Video was integrated, which he didn't know untill he realized that the card sucked. (it ran half-life at 20 fps)... Then, because of poor design (air intake/exhaust being placed on the bottom of the unit), his mobo fried. They wouldn't cover it by warranty, because they said he had mishandled it, by placing it on a solid surface. (where .125 inch rubber feet wouldn't do anything to help)... So he had to dish out for shipping back to Dell, the mobo, and shipping for 2 boxes back. One box was empty. Nothing in it. Void. A $10 charge, for a large cardboard box.
