No it doesn't. Ships aren't made from concrete plates, but thin, tigh and precise plating, I believe :p
As for the ships, looks like, hmm, how would I call that? You know, like the F16, a good, average whole purpose plane, not outstanding in any regard but a good choice for export, so, voila, an export fighter. So it would be cool being flashy, I s'pose. Or maybe not.

If you make plates too recessed (lines, shading either too dark or white), the map often ends up looking cartoonish.

That too. But in fact, it's easy to show: get someone to get some screenshots from recent flight sims, hull plates aren't recessed AT ALL on the maps. They're just barelly visible lines, usually.

Hell, just grab a piccy of a naval destroyers hull or a fighter jet;
http://www.aoqz76.dsl.pipex.com/Web%20Page%20Components/Wallpaper/Planes/F16%20Taxi.jpg
for example (not the best pic, I imagine).

Truth be told, I massively overdetail my hull-plating still, but at least now I'm learning to keep it subtle.

I don't know what Lighty's on about. There's no all grey ship in TVWP. Some areas are recessed, but you have to look for them. And similarity would be the way the plating ends abruptly in the center of the wings, and *maybe* the plate on the bottom of the wings. I've yet to cut copy and paste a texture and have it work for me (aside from the crimion)

Methinks you misunderstood what I wanted to say.

Maybe, what I understood is that you wanted him to make the plates more recessed. If not, please correct me.

With "individual texture plating shadows" I actually meant the... err... brightness differences in a plate. (Now doesn't that sound odd :wtf: ). The plates look a bit flat for Freespacy textures, because they look too much like filled with one colour (exaggerating here).

Bah, look at the :v: models to see what I mean. :)

I've understood. Gradients because of curveness. I don't think that's really important too. FS2 has lighting that should simulate that more or less well. Nah, the real thing, now ( something I'm gonna try from now on, even if not for FS2 ), is to make the material actually look like metal, or painted metal.

Eh, modern airplanes arent really a good guide to use as theyre made of stressd aluminium which can be pierced with a good pointy stick. A fighter which is built both to withstand vaccuum and taking hits from high energy weapons could concievably have much heavier plating. IMO you could have it either way.

Oh aye and metal texs are easy, this one took me 5 secs to do back when you were doing the ezekiel, iirc done it to show the differences between using lines for hullplating and using bevels.

I don't think you can pierce the plates of an A10 or a B52 with a pointy stick, nor the ones of a battlecruisng, an abrams or a AH64, but find any superobvious platelines on those...
And yeah, it's very easy to make a metal map... on a small square. Doing so on a whole ship, that's another matter. Not that I really find it complicated either, mind you :p
Your exemple isn't very impressive, that said. Just throwing a metal plate scan as a layer with some filter and no additional work doesn't really cut it, for me.

A b52 you could, its not armoured in anyway, the apaches not very heavily armoured and I think you should go look at a battlecruiser or an Abrams  Like I said, imo you could do it either way, nice clean lines or heavier plating, should be a design decision as opposed to a technical one if you get what I mean.

It wasnt meant to be impressive you twat, like I said I made it in 5 seconds. In fact it was meant to be the opposite  Does show how much nicer bevels look than simple lines though, spec when you resize them down to 50%

Show some respect and you'll get some, getting up on your high horse because somebody dares to disagree with you and making stupid statements isnt going to earn you any.

I don't see any lack of respect in my post, but I see more and more agressiveness in those forums. Be all jumpy if you want, if I don't reply to you, it's not because I don't agree with you ( maybe if you've seen any of my models, you've noticed I use bevels, mmh? ), it's because I don't want to take any **** from anybody anymore. If you consider that as arrogance, well, be my guest.

But just for the sake of the argument:
Abrams:
http://sa.nextwish.org/Unsorted/War%20Photos/abrams.jpg
slick ( save for the articulated parts, obviously

Aegis ( coz I can't find a decent pic of a cruiser:
http://www.clw.org/GRAPHICS/CAT/Arleigh.jpg
slick

a10:

slick

Voila, my stupid statements have been proven.

Fair enough, just dont get on your high horse if it comes back your way. And if I seem jumpy, its because i'm off the smokes and beer for the last few weeks, and I am jumpy.

The aegis and a10 are designed that way for aerodynamical and whatever its water equivelent is reasons, no such requirement in space. Theres no good reason to stop people from making their armour plates as big and bulky as they like. The ship might look like a monstrosity, but thats up to them, saying they shouldnt be because airplanes or ships arent isnt correct.

Pointing out that something is of less than finished quality when somebody has stated that it was thrown together in 5 secs is slightly stupid imo, as they're just going to tell you to read their damn post again. Maybe the you twat was a bit much but the rolleyes was certainly deserved.

Maybe if you look back, you'll see I never actually posted the pics, mmh? They werent actually intended for you afaik, though I'd have to take a look at the ezekiel to be sure, swoohs down atm.
