For us it isn't the end of the world.  But for of victims it is.  All that's left is a shell, or worse, a suicide attempt succeeds.  Luckily I haven't had to deal with that part.  Only attempts.  Serious attempts, not the crap where they call someone to talk them out of it.  The psyche is a fragile thing, rape destroys it.  I don't know if i agree that rape is worse than murder, because unlike with murder, one can heal from rape.  On the other hand...i rank it right up in the top three crimes.  Along with murder...and kids.

now the part about how often it happens...i agree 100%, it happens far too often.  then again as far as i am concerned, once is too often.

And well, rape is always there, like the little cow in Arla's commercials. It has always happened and will happen into foreseeable future, which doesn't make it ok. Janos: all the more reason not to make jokes about it. It's just not funny. At all. And you need to consider that making jokes about something as nasty as this will piss people off, precisely because it does happen so often.

Wolf: I think rape is worse than murder because murder is final - the victim is dead, and cannot suffer any more. Rape leaves them alive, but a shadow of their former self. They have been violated in the worst possible way - psychologically as well as physically. It alters someone's mind forever - they will have to deal with the event for the rest of their life, and that is something that they might not be able to do. As you said, the victim may never be able to trust a man again, let alone form a close bond with one. It wrecks a life, for no good reason other than the perpetrator's base desire for power. 'Cos rape isn't about lust or desire - if a man really needed relief then he could use a prostitute - it's about power. The feeling of total dominance over a woman, that they are completely helpless against the assault. And it sickens me. I'd sooner kill a woman than force myself on her. That's the honest truth.

I see all crimes as theft. It can be theft of property, of life, of dingity, of privacy, of health, etc. Rape takes so much from a person, but leaves them to endure all the after-effects.

and pyro i apreciate what you are saying.  It's not about sex.  It's about violence.   I do however rank it and murder equally.  Along with the crimes against kids.   The reason i say that, is that there is a chance for a rape victim to become a rape survivor.  That is a powerful thing to see.  More so when you are the first person that they allow to touch them after a few years without being touched anyone.  A murder victim doesn't have the chance to heal, obviously.  Although i will go so far as to say that the act itself, does end life as she knows it, and is every bit as horrific.  Have we reached an accord?

(I was comparing the levels of suffering involved. Murder, yes, you're dead, but then again you're dead. No more problems. Rape you survive, so the suffering goes on for months and years. Then again, I have no personal experience of either, so I'm not in a position to make a definitive statement...)
