Yeah, i know what you mean. There are only some briefings which are about 7 "sites" long. But they are fully necessary if you really want to understand the huge story. Cause some questions just need to be answered by briefing and not ingame. For example the meeting from Admiral Nakami with the Andro-Terran leader. There you read

about the history of the Andro-Terrans and how they could be the descendants of Aken Bosch and his followers who just disappeared in the original FS2 campaign.
And well, you can be luky to have the Marco Polo, the descendant of the Colossus, by your side. If not, the chances to survive in Andromeda would be really small^^. Ok, and of course he is no modeler, so he took the biggest friendly model he found as the main ship of his campaign
