Descent2 to Freespace2 Total Conversion?
Would this be possible? anyone like the idea? I just finished off a Descent book and suddenly got back into the whole thing again, I'd love tob be able to play with Descent ships and against Descent robots in a Freespace engine, anyone feel this way? with enough support it might eventually turn into a project if enough people want this to happen...

Well I've never been a "flying through rocks shooting Robots" kinna guy,..but hey what the hell  

But I think we might wanna hold off on too many more MODs and TCs until we get a few of the ones being worked on now finished

Agreed, i have no plans to try and organise anything at all at this stage, theres just to much else to do, I just wondered if people would be receptive to this, or if they'd say "thats nice" and then forget about it.

I'll add more info about my idea later, gotta have dinner now...

Right now though I'm up to my hairline in fighting this damned new battlecarrier and FRED  lol

Figures,..get a great looking 845 poly cap ship...cob2fs2 doesn't like it that low,..but the higher poly version freaks out in fred

Anyways, even if enough people are interested, I'm not sure what kind of things would feature... there are 3 games in the Descent series, all with different robots as enemies, and a total of only three flyable ships. Some creativity might be in order....

:ahum:

Four player ships. The Pyro Gx, the Pyro Gl, the Pheonix, and the Magnum.

It could be more than easily done in the FS engine, and the "maps" could be very detailed. (i.e. designed like real interiors for real buildings)

Using ship sub-systems and such can make for destructible regions, and the installations can be within asteroids, planetoids, etc. when both space and interior combat is wished.

I'm not quite sure how the whole mine thing would work... I had a strong desire to actually try Descent in open space (if you read some of the novels, you'll find that some of thier time combating robots was spent in space). I've allways liked the way the Descent ships moved and worked, so I'd love to try them without worrying about walls...Then again... maybe another engine would be better for this (like the IW2 engine) as that could allow for a lot more interesting tricks with intertia...

Actually your wrong, there are 5 descent ships, the Phoenix, the Magnum, the Pyro-GL, the Pyro-GX, and the purple pyro, There is also a Black Pyro-gl dubbed the Blackstar.
I would be interested in the mod, as I started a project like it a while ago, but I ended up scrapping it, you can get all the robots in .cob or .3ds format, I'm not sure which from http://www.descent-network.com
wrong answer you see hiding in that asteroid belt are 6 dralthi fighters, a Kilrathi gangbang. -Devereaux

I've found them... so far so good... I'm just wondering what format the Descent ships are in in the game, and how easy it would be to convert them... if we could get the models done there'd be relativly little work to be done to make it all happen... just lots of table tweaking I think...

MMh, ok, well, as I can't handle Outerspace by myself for now (it would be a long trip, and in september I'm not sure I'll have internet), I've deicided to work on that, after all  
But don't expect mines or massive robo fights, I'll do a story linked with FS, and involving mining companies, smugglers and pirates (much like Project Omega 18 if my memory serves me well) . There will probably be not very much about the robots seen in the game (exepted some that you may protect in asteroid fields while they're doing what they were supposed to do at first: minning!.
With the aknowledgment of Styxx (thanx again), this campaign will happen just before Machina Terra's campaign, and will be linked with it by some minor events.
Well, I hope I'll be able to make it to the end, and to see at least some polite interest. Thanx.

Ok, I've tweaked around, and I have found some interesting things about descent files format. Now if someone could tell me where I can find a program that can extract models out of HAM files (of course the ones called HAMM are not used for HAM files bur HOG one, I love this logic), well, that would be nice, and I wouldn't have to model a ship that is alreday done (rhaaaa, if only there was an extract command in modelview  ). I know there must be this kind of tool somewhere, because I found a oof23ds util (oof are pof equivalent in descent).
