I HATE IT.

uni starts in three weeks, i call my last year's landlord like he told me to, and it turns out he's given my room to someone else. so i have nowhere to live. freaking hell. so i have to look for somewhere. so i have to waste a day driving up and down from newie just to check out random rooms. does anyone ever have the same problem? you feel secure in the knowledge that you have somewhere to live, and then, it turns out you don't.

There's usually lots of prime living space around any campus. Your university probably has a place where you can look up this sort of info (I know my college does), probably even online. Barring that, just walk into any nearby appartmenet builiding and ask the super is there's any vacancies.

Or do the smart thing: Go find some geeks and flirt with them till they let you clear out their 'hacking dungeon' to use as a bedroom.

You'd have to put up with the stench of concentrated coffee and the joyful screams of a victorious L34 Warlock at 2am, but it'd be cheap and they'd be easy to manipulate through the use of low-cut tops and strategically placed 'lost' panties.

You don't need to be a slut.

Trust me, find someone geeky enough and they'll put up with an amazing amount of **** purely on the basis that you're the only girl who'll talk to them.

Plus, geeks are handy to have around. They might not be able to put up shelves or be particularly tidy, but they can fix your TV/VCR/Computer/Vibrator/CD-Player for free and might even be able to hack the Uni network to your advantage.

icespeed, there is a significant problem with housing that is near campus, but not on it(IE apartments and rental properties), the rent is usually exhorbitant.  If you don't care about eating anything but ramen or have relativly unlimited funds go for it, but look slightly more far afield for a better deal.

*that's a backhanded compliment steak:D

Living on campus = ownage. I currently pay $95 a week for rent, electricity, gas, water and access to the uni's internet connection in a 6 bed, two bath place, and I'm literally 3 minutes away from the 2 buildings where I have most of my classes. Last year was even better, as it was an extra 11 bucks and there was an extra bathroom in the flat (though it was further away). It might not help you this semester, as if it's anything like here applications will have closed quite awhile back, but you might be able to get a spot next semester.

Dude?  I pay $100 a month for the lot which includes water and garbage.  Of cource I have other utilities, power and cable, but that all.

You are actually paying $380 a month.

I'm paying $225 a month or $56 a week, off campus is cheaper and has no significant advantages over on campus save proximity to classes.

Well, keep in mind you're dealing with entirely different countries/economies here.

$95 AUD is $73.5524 USD for everything, including net costs. It's a very good deal around here, especially when you factor in the convenience of being this close to the uni, the money saved by being this close (free parking, less money on petrol/public transport) and the social advantages of on campus life, well, it works for me.
