An experiment in bump mapping...
I was inspired a while ago by the creation of bump mapping on ships and decided to try making one for an Aeolus cruiser. I'm not sure wether I like the effect or not, or wether it's worth creating similar maps for all the other FS ships for use in future renders. Anyways, any input would be welcome on the bump mapping maps of this picture.

It's where you add "bumps" to the image maps. I did mine by pumping up the contrast on a copy of the maps. I'll try and post a comparison pic later...

Heres a contrast between the two, apologies for the difference in background/lighting.

It looks more rough on the left.  It gives it a real metallic look,

Have you tried Shivan vessels yet?

Nope, it takes ages to copy/paste and alter all the maps then get them working, so I jut wanted to do one ship and see what the reaction was. The Aeolus has a nice texture anyway so I chose it

you need som better reflectance effects (I don't mean mirror, though that wouldn't hurt) try useing the conductor reflectince with the rughness turrned all the way down, remember to enable ray tracing and set quality to high.

Can this be done with 3D Exploration? I haven't seen such options... if theres another way (by altering texture maps) then I can manage it

Is that an actual bump map, or just a normal map adjusted to look bump mapped?

I think it's the former, but if it's the latter than it would be interesting to see how it looks in game...if the former, the bumps won't work in-game.

No, this one makes use of 2 types of maps. The original textures. and a copy of the textures with increased contrast to achieve the bump mapping effect. It would only work if you balanced the two by altering just one texture, which might make the ships look bad.

when i try bump mapping it sometimes looks kinda plastic-ish. it is better to use a brand new bump map then the original texture.

That settles it, I'm doing the maps

In mine theres a little improvement, however Bobboau has definitely got a better way of doing it by the looks of things... how did you do that?

He's a modeller, remember? Those cruisers are reflective as well(look at the turrets!), he did them in TS.
