Try telling a Catholic that. I did. It took a long argument to realize she was better at badmington and kissing than understanding the finer points of philosophy.

Um, last time I checked, I am a Catholic.  And, no offense to the person you talked to, but I'm sure I know much more about Catholic doctrine than she does, judging by your conversation with her. :p

May I also point out the catholic literature my aunt has lying around. One of the weekly newsletters had a story of a young girl trying to explain to her peers why she wasn't christian but catholic.

Are you sure whether you mean Catholic or Roman Catholic?  There is a difference, y'know.

To everyone who just flamed my post:

I don't think Jesus would approve of the current state of churches. What do they do? Every day, they go, listen to some songs, give some offering, listen to a sermon, and then they leave and continue their normal lives. I don't think this is what Jesus had in mind when he started the church.

Vyper, I'm saying that person is wrong, and that literature is wrong if it supports that viewpoints.  A Christian is, by definition, a follower of Christ, which would make any Catholic a Christian.

aldo, the term "catholic" without any capitalization is a generic term that means "universal."  "Catholic" is used to refer to the specific Catholic Church, whether it's the Latin or Eastern Rite.

Terminator, I think you're confusing churches with the people who go to them.  Someone who goes to church just for the sake of doing so is only playing lip service to their faith.  In contrast, someone who goes to Church on Sunday and lives the rest of the week in imitation of Christ is a true Christian.  And anyway, how can any of us tell what Christ had in mind as to the state of the community of believers two thousand years down the line?  We just have to do the best we can with what we have.

In conclusion, Christ commanded the preaching of the gospel, not the sitting in a pew every sunday.

This thread is now about the pope dying. It kinda sucks, but It'll be interesting to see who would become the new one :)

'that' easily?

He's an old bloke with Parkinson's - he's not exactly fighting fit at the best of times, let alone when he needs a tube to breathe.  I feel sorry for him, in actual fact.

Indeed, it's one of those things that happens.

But I still maintain that non-believers have more fun while they are alive, and afterwards? well frankly who cares?

if[/b] there is a 'there'.....

of course, the converse is that if a religious person dies and there is no heaven.... they're not going to know, are they?

So the moral of the story is "Pick a fun religion"

Maybe.........

Christianity is very practical in that respect.  Paul and others in the Bible freely acknowledge that if there's no heaven, no resurrection from the dead, then it makes perfect sense to sin all you want. :)

I'm sure the Vatican's deep pockets and the best doctors in the world contribute a little as well.

They didn't help John Paul I very much. Unless, of course, he was murdered like the conspiracy theorists think he was.

And the conspiracy theorists are ALWAYS right, don'tcha know? JFK got shot by KGB and CIA operatives working together from the grassy knoll. The US never landed on the moon. 9/11 was a Mossad/CIA plot. AIDS is a biowarfare weapon developed by a secret American military program. Princess Diana was killed by the Royal Family, who wanted to stop an Egyptian from sitting on the throne of the UK.

Who knows what's true and what's not?
Wash: This landing's gonna get pretty interesting.
Mal: Define "interesting".
Wash: *shrug* "Oh God, oh God, we're all gonna die"?
Mal: This is the captain. We have a little problem with our entry sequence, so we may experience some slight turbulence and then... explode.

Almost veered off-topic, but stayed in the general area.

I'm believing that though the Pope has had his fair share of trials that result from his state as a human being, subject to all natural crosses that we bear, and that he has gotten through them fairly well, this might be the end for him.

It seems there are many of us, Catholic or not, who believe his strength will pull him through, but for myself, I believe that there is a prevailing possibility that he will fail, at which point the Church might suffer a great setback.

Ultimately, in terms of the beliefs, the fate of the pope is literally in the hands of God, and whatever it is He decides to do, we will never understand. "The Pope will make it." Maybe. "The Pope won't make it." Maybe.

And though that might have been in light of your more comical approach, Corsair, you bring up a very valid point. Who knows what's true and what's not?

...On a much lighter note -  DAMN that popemobile is funkay.
