I used the hades reskin off of http://www.freespace2.f2s.com  and then took darks Polaris model and replicated it. a lot.

There are about 200,000 polys in this. no joke.

Thanks to Shrike for the texture help, I can show you this tonight. Those that read Terran Imperium will recognize this ship as the Illiad, a specially commissioned recon vessel currently in drydock undergoing Serious repairs after she was nearly destroyed in a blockade run. She will return.

Nice, though the picture is slightly cluttered - but for the purpose intended, it works. Actually, considering this is your first proper 'render', this is an admirable job.

I know what this scene is missing! 2 point (or maybe 3, if you want) perspective. It looks like a small object when there isn't much perspective.

I put an Orion in just for size comarison:

ooooooh Gotta love the Hades. I dunno why but its in my opinion the coolest ship in Freespace 2, well second coolest, Aeolus being the Coolest ship.

My fave ship too. Especially with that skin, it looks amazing.

My second-fave is the Mentu. It's a shame it got crappy weapons.

That is one sweet spacedock.  

Setekh is right, though- it needs something to give a sense of scale in the first pic. Put a fighter wing flying along the hull, and have them cast shadows on the Hades to give a good sense of how close they are.

Then, to establish the scale of the fighters, you could have a fighter much closer to the camera, with the cockpit clearly visible.

I don't know how hard it would be for you though...as an art critic with no good tools of his own, I'm all talk.
