be sure you get one with an optical zoom, digital zoom kills your resolution. if you have the cash get a digital slr, as it comes with a rel lens and can be swapped for a super death lens from hell for the long shots.

Look at Canon and Olympus.  Oh and Fuji I'm told is good too but I don't know those as well.

Olympus makes some really nice small sized cheaper digital cameras.  But I budget of $100 it too low for pretty much anything worthwhile.  Stay away from the ultra budget cameras (the "amazing" $35 ones).  Look to spend at least $200 when you're done (with a memory card) for something cheap but decent.

You might want to also look into how long it takes the camera to turn on/take a picture. Some cameras can take awhile.

indeed, the one i got takes a few seconds of button holding to take a shot, especially if you just turned it on and the flash caps are empty.which sucks if you have to take a shot quickly. and thats gonna suck if i run into a bear in the woods and cant get my camera to go off before the bear runs off or decides to eat me.

I have a very old Fuji, which still works just fine - although you do have to keep still for a couple of seconds when taking a picture...

The trick with buying any digital camera is to check out the makers that are traditional camera people first, like Canon, Fuji, Olympus and Kodak, before trying the lesser known.

Oh and try to get a BIG lens - this is much more valuable than megapixels...

I'd recommend any of the Powershot A-xx or Fuji FinePix models. My friend and I own each respectively; my old FinePix 1300 still does the job for party photos as well as his  A-series does, but if you want real clarity on big images, fast motion shots and distance shots the A-Series wins.

I am a Nikon fan, but I use CoolPix 4500 (should switch to CP8800 or D70). Check out Canons (Ixus and Powershot series). Pentax has some nice models as well. Olympus' Mu cams are great, but Mu Mini is a bit expensive for you (it has the best screen when compared to the size of the camera I have personally seen).

I personally would go for a bit more expensive camera, since they are just superior in every aspect, and the bit higher cost is worth it. Better pictures, more options, yadda yadda. Remember: it's not just the allmight megapixel count that matters! You can have a 5 megapixel camera which takes far worse pictures than 4 megapixel camera, just due to worse optics.

Also, my very limited experience suggests that you'd get a camera with CompactFlash cards, because they are big in both physical and computeresquecal size.
lol wtf

The Canon's arn't worth it unless your aiming for the high end ones IMO. Plus either way, they have bad customer service / warranties and sometimes equipment.
I hate to bust anyone's bubble, but I've had many bad experiences with Canon over the past few years...

But yes, I am also curious as to what digi-cam's don't have much of a wait time when taking a pic. Is there camera's that have none at all?
I really find that a major drawback with digi-cam's...
