I sincerely hope that nobody does something like that. It'd ruin the whole experience. The veil of mystery is what makes the Shivans such a great enemy. If you came out with an explanation as to what they're all about it'd destroy their image - they wouldn't be scary any more.
As for the binary system being the "home" system, almost certainly not. A marshalling area, maybe, or a kind of hub linking the GTVA/Ancient systems from wherever it is they come from, but certainly not their home system. After all, there was a third Knossos portal in that system, and the Ancients certainly wouldn't have been able to build one in Shivan space (by all accounts, the Ancients were wiped out rather quickly, so they wouldn't have had time to build portals or take any territory from the Shivans before they were overrun).
The start of that mission is one of the best moments in the game, though. Scared the living hell out of me.
Raiden, have you played any user-made campaigns yet? If not, I'd highly recommend Derelict and Homesick. Also check out the Hosted projects forums - some very exciting stuff going on there, what with the SCP and everything.
