Apparently this thingy was released in the US yesterday.

I've actually been looking at the DS and PSP; normally I'm not much of a player of portables, but the idea of WiFi multiplayer intrigues me.... so what I'm wondering is whether any of our transatlantic cousins have got either/both, and how good both actually are.  Especially RE: loading times and battery life.

(NB: DS is out in the UK justnow, PSP might not be until Xmas - although I can get my parents to pick up one when they go on holiday to the states if there's no region protection).

PSP = wee dicky portable console by Sony called Playstation Portable/Pocket/Portaloo
Nintendo DS = DS
WiFi = techno-thingigummy allowing wireless connection
RE: with regards to
US = United States of...something.  Big place, bit weird in some parts, full of shouty people.
UK = United Kingdom.  Cold, dreary place most famous for tea and exporting convicts.  Who then beat the Southerners at cricket.
Xmas = Christmas

*trying to get back on topic*

I wanted to get me a PSP, but now they've moved the european release date again....and I'm looking for alternatives.
I don't really want it for playing games, but the ability to play mp3 and watch MPEG4 video from a flash memory card on a pretty big screen is intruiging (I'm in trains pretty often).

And AFAIK there's no region code on the games/movies

And for those who have no idea what I'm talking about. That's a PSP:

I'll have you know we Scots don't like cricket, don't play cricket, and take pride in not having anything to do with it.

No, the scots prefer to throw tree trunks around the place, acting like they're hot ****.

As for the PSP, well, send me a few hundred bucks (with the exchange rates, its probably like 2 pounds) and I'll let you know how it is.

Yeah your right, Cricket is pretty gay. As gay as wearing a dress... :p

But seriously, OMG you a scot? awsome. *respect goes up 2 points* ;)

I'm mostly Irish myself though, but I'm sure there's a splash of scot in me aswell.
Scotland and Ireland are on the list of places I want to visit before I a) die or b) become to decripd to do anything.

New Zealand is also on the list. :)

edit: whoops back on topic.

So the PSP can play PS2 games on it? =O

There are so many versions of footy now-a-day that its confusing.
Personally I follow the NRL, but there is also AFL, ARL, and obvcourse soccer. That is if you can call soccer a sport... :doubt:

BTW. Are those mini DVD's the PSP takes? I presume so, otherwise wouldn't be really worth it, with such high content data these days.

Oi....careful now.  And get the bloody name rightl it ain't football unless you use your feet constantly to kick the ball when you play it.

UMD, which I think stands for 'universal media disk'.  It's about DVD capacity, though; sony have a few deals to release full movies on the format.

Meh. PSP will suck as long as it cost $250. I'm not gonna pay that much for a piddly little thing when I can spend the same amount and get myself a nice next-gen console.

I heard it was $180.  Which is ~£90 UK

:D

I've heard people say it's worth it as a high tech 'thing' (suppossedly sony are creating a firmware update to add a simple word processor or something and email, plus it has support for mp3 and movie playing via the disks or stored on flash mem, and also it has that kick-arse superblack screen you get on laptops nowadays.... ); obviously you'll always pay over-the-odds for new tech, though.

I'll admit I was more interested in the Ds initially (it's more 'unique', plus the stylus opens up interesting possibilities), but the PSP is getting rave reviews......plus I've budgeted about £100 for a new MP3 player, and the PSP can do that, so it's tempting me.
