Breaking news. Another quake, 8,2 in magnitude, just off the coast of Sumatra. Another tsunami might be coming as we speak.

Did it displace a land slide?  You don't get a tsunami if the water is displaced by something, and no a seismic energy wave isn't usually enough to do one like the one that killed so many.

No, you get a tsunami precisely when water gets displaced.  The one three months ago occured because a section of the ocean floor either collapsed or was uplifted (can't remember offhand which) and caused water to be displaced above it.  The effect rippled out across the ocean and created a tsunami when it reached land.  This one could be similar, but at least warnings are being sent out this time.

This quake had the epicenter just south of where the december quake took place. So, if a tsunami is formed, the same areas would be hit. As if a quarter million dead wasn´t enough the first time...
There´s some serious fault movement going down there, the quake is said to have lasted almost 5 minutes in lenght.  That´s a very long time for the ground to be shaking.
Since Indonesia hasn´t been hit by a tsunami yet (not that i´ve  heard), maybe there isn´t gonna be one. But there is still the danger of aftershocks. We have to wait and see.

Apparently, it's actually an aftershock of the Boxing Day quake; it's been predicted a tsunami will happen, but not on as large a scale as before.

Are they certain its an aftershock.  CBC was interviewing one expert who said it was unconfirmed if it was an aftershock or a new event.

Do they really want to take the chance either way? We've already seen what can happen... if it's possible it could happen again then for goodness sake, evacuate no matter the cost. If it's a false alarm then so much the better.

There wasn't one.  The damage was localized to the area around the epicenter, and no significant tsunamis ever materialized.  It's one of those things where you never really know until well after the fact, as there are no monitoring buies in the indian ocean to detect tsunami movement.

i mean the first quake, and didn't the tsunami hit a day or two after the quake last time?
