[q]Some IMAX theatres are refusing to show movies that mention evolution or the Big Bang because of protests by religious groups who say the ideas contradict the Bible.[/q]

Stupid, isn't it.  I caould understand it if they simply thought it wasn't going to be popular, but because some narrow minded people refuse to accept the existence of an alternate (and more factually supported, but let's not get into that here) form of creation to their own.....

They'll have to put an 'evolution' warning on these things eventually...

:blah: Stuff like this saddens me.

Yet it is very much  a contradiction upon themselves, which only solidifies my beliefs further.

You'd think if they believed in their religeon enough, they wouldn't mind stuff like that because they think they know what is true.

Funny thing is, alot of scientists are quite religous. They have a mind to keep the two seperated however. On one hand they discuss how evolution worked in the scientific sense etc, and on the other they believe the old Adam and Eve story.

:sigh: The world is always damaged by the poor decisions of the few. :(

Believe it or not they have a right to decide not to play certain IMAX films.

That doesn't stop it being a bad decision when the reasons are stupid.

True enough, but if it's a matter of pressure being applied, then there are issues to be answered... :blah:

And the people complaining have a right to not watch certain IMAX films.

I am all for the free flow and representation of ideas and free speach of those ideas. But I am not for the forced availiability of mediums. That said, I don't support evolution, but supression of ideas is stupid but not illegal. Matter of fact, suppression of any form of conflict is ridiculous and dangerous. Additionally, you would think that Christians would support the free flow of ideas seeing what protestants went through around the time of Martin Luther and the 95 thesis. Unfortunatly, that is not the case.

Additionally, from a business standpoint, the IMAX theatres might be trying to attract the family entertainment market. Basically as I see it, they might attract more customers with family entertainment than with movies with an evolutionary spin to them.

I should also mention that many companies get blackmailed like this all the time as well. Particularly by fringe groups like Rainbow/PUSH/REV. Jesse Jackson. And sometimes it is easier to pay them off or just do as they request. Horrible as this sounds it is the truth.

Indeed. Yet if you were to start up a pro-rights group, they'd be slandered for anti-religous beliefs or whatever.

IMAX has always had documentaries and stuff showing. A CG aided evolution movie would of been kewl. At least it will probably be out on DVD anyway.

Ah well, live and let die.

As in a group of people who would fight against certain movements by certain groups. Anything that would conflict with freedom of speech etc.
Things like above.

Some things groups such as one from above are good. But the occasional poor judgement error shouldn't be allowed to screw everyone over. :sigh:

Well this isn't a violation of freedom of speach, though. They are not telling anyone that they cannot produce this stuff. The IMAX theatres have decided against showing it. If people who produce this stuff really want to have it shown they can create their own IMAX theatre. Only thing stopping them is the financing, which isn't a violation of freedom of speach. Also I should mention that the IMAX theatres don't have to listen to these religous groups.

I know. When I say freedom of speech, I also mean... its hard to put into words. But more so the ideal of freedom of speech.
I kind of mean the interference of others rights.

I'm all for multi-cultural and religous acceptance. Hell, I live in a country that's all about that. But I don't think they should interfere to the extent, where I can't go and see a movie about evolution in a giant kick ass screen.

I don't know why the people who would put pressure on IMAX would mind so much to stop it. I would of recommended they see it. They might enjoy it. They don't have to believe it, I'm not asking them or anyone else too. I'm even sceptical about some portions of evolution myself. But still, the quality of photography usually demonstrated in IMAX is nearly always enjoyable.

I thought that's what ratings are for anyway. Why not just press for a warning such as the 'Mature Content' warnings. They could have a 'Religous Disputed Content' warning. Makes more sense to me than to go all out and attempt to stop things.

I realize it was IMAX's choice in the end but you have to admit, if the pressure from the goups there were non-existant, they most probably would have shown the movie.

That's my two cents anyway. I'm willing to tolorate others belief's, why can't they tolorate mine?

I'd say to call in the EFF, but I don't think this would quite be their area of interest.  ACLU, perhaps?

Is anyone else bothered about the fact such nuts can actually have this control over a cinema?

This is what really disturbs me-- this whole movement isn't just an issue of government, it's a massive social shift. The American people are giving themselves freely to this whole pile of fecal matter. So sit down everybody, and grab some popcorn; it's time to watch history repeat itself again.
