PCI-express ranting, pissing and moaning
As the title said.
Today i woke up all fired up, "i´m gonna get my card today!".
So i called the shop to ask if they had the card i wanted in stock, just in case. And what does he tell me?
"Sorry, we will only feature PCI-e cards in stock now." Grrrrrrrrrr!!

So, what about us poor AGP users? Do we have to be forced into conversion? Lamers...
I seriously considered taking my business elsewhere, but alas they are the only ones who sell good cards. But only in the mail now. So here i am, stuck with a 5 year old Matrox G-400, waiting for them to grace me with some attention and get the order going.
What´s so special about PCI-e anyway? Why couldn´t they work the upgrades into a normal AGP interface? God damn money suckers, that´s what they are. It´s a conspiracy. In two years time, when i finally get the money to buy a new PCI-e motherboard and a card to go with it, they will have moved to some other "new" technology, and PCI-e will be going the way of the Dodo, just like AGP is now...

Just if you´re wondering, i ordered the XFX FX6800 Ultra. Almost 300 euros worth. I wonder how long it will last...
:nervous:

PS: Did i say they are all god damn money suckers, out to suck our blood?

If they wanted me to buy PCI-express, they should've made a MicroATX board that supported it. :p

I made sorta the same mistake, when I went to upgrade my backbone.  PCI-E was just barely coming out and I bought an AGP based motherboard.  I'm using a Radeon 9800 Pro, and it's still great for everything out there, but I do have a very limited upgrade path.

What PCI-E allows, well at least nvidia wants to push, is the new SLI architecture. If you were to run a PCI-E board, in my opinion, you would only want to buy one that does SLI.  Downside about SLI is that you have to buy TWO videocards.  I just dont see the justification to have double the power.   I'd say if you wanted to run a single videocard in your rig, and wanted to save a few bucks here and there, get the AGP stuff for now.  It's still pretty good, and the motherboards arent as expensive if you dont plan to upgrade.

But when you do upgrade the backbone of your system, consider getting PCI-E as you KNOW it'll be discontinued, just like MCA and EISA.

The thing about PCI-E is its more expandable like the SLI stuff that nVidia is pushing.  It replaces both PCI and AGP in one shot...so you don't need two controllers and there's all sorts of other benefits and whatnot.  PCI has been around for a REALLY long time and AGP has been around for almost as long...

There's a whack of changes coming to PC's right now.  BTX form factor, PCI-E, DDR2/3/4 (whatever they decide on), and SATA (to replace IDE).

Yep, and it's all very difficult to explain to Joe Blow why he should lay down $300 instead of $150 for the "same" parts.

Forced conversions are the lifeblood of the hardware industry, and as far as I know, pretty big in the software market too.

I'm running an AGP XFX Geforce 6800GT in my rig right now, so it's not like they don't make AGP cards anymore.  Though, if you're an ATI person this is the last you'll see of AGP ATi cards.  Nvidia's gonna run one more generation, then it's switch over or don't upgrade.

As it stands it's pretty pointless, modern graphics card just don't need the bandwidth.  AGP4X is barely being used, much less 8x or PCIe16.  But intel's been pushing the switch, so others end up following.  The extra electrical power over the PCIe bus helps though, at least reducing the number of molex connectors in your machine.

Might be nice if the 1x PCIe slots on modern machines actually had some hardware that used em though.  It's supposed to replaced AGP and PCI, but so far it's only managing to replace AGP.  Most of the actual use of PCIe replacing PCI I've heard of was limited to on-board gigabit ethernet adapters running over the PCIe bus.

So far, PCIe is a serving as a non-PCI replacement and as a glorified AGP64x when we weren't using the bandwidth of AGP8x.  SLI is nice - but, goes without saying that people running SLI aren't forced into anything.  They have the money to spend and they like spending it.

SATA's already here, doing well though it's still pretty unneccessary.  RAID options are nice, and the thinner cords don't disrupt airflow like PATA did.  Needing a damned floppy drive to install WinXP isn't so great.  AMD's mananging to keep good old DDR around, and since switching over to DDR2 yields essentially no performance benefits as of yet and would require a redesign of the onboard mem controller, DDR's likely to stick around.  Dunno much about DDR3, but you'll likely see it on intel first.

As for BTX, I'm not sure what to expect that.  Mostly a patch on hot running intel chips.  AFAIK, AMD chips can't actually use the form factor, and intel chips won't be able to integrate memory controllers if they're using the form factor.  Something about trace length being too far for the ram placement.

You can get past AGP 4x if you really try, mainly by pushing AA and anisostropic filtering to the limits at high resolutions.

Anyway, Swamp_Thing, if you want to upgrade, use an online store. Newegg, for example. They'll probably keep AGP in stock for quite a while.

Thing is, the shop you contacted is going to Elite itself out of the market, since 90+% of the market still uses AGP. Give them a month or so of selling more or less sweet FA, and they'll soon reconsider the strategy ;)
