Half Life 2 to be pulled from shelves
on one hand, im pretty happy that a games developer has finally been able to beat back a publisher, and removed the need for one....on the other hand, I realize that its giving up a publisher for the despicable and pure evil that is steam

Are cyber cafe's going to get the cost of their licenses refunded if they are no longer going to be valid?

And yes, the idea of people becoming even more reliant on Steam is worrying. I always pay cash for games, so I can keep an eye on my budget, so no more Valve games for me.

I won't be buying CS2, then. I do not own a credit card, and since I'm 16, I cannot.

And steam is a pile of ****e anyway.

I like Steam these days, but this is not good business practise. They're cutting out a large chunk of their market.

This is bad news as far as I'm concerned. The games are still being sold at the same full price that other games on the shelves are. Why does't that price entitle the user to a hard copy like most other games? I for one have suffered too many hard drive issues to trust keeping my paid for game exclusively on the drive... and given I'm paying my cash for the game - I'd rather think it's not my responsibility to ensure I keep it properly backed up. Valve should distribute the game in CD or DVD form to anyone who requests that it be shipped in that format. Steam should be used for overseeing updates only if the user so desires.

If you can't tell already, I just plain don't trust Steam. It's a bloated program that further increases an already long startup process for HL2 (even on a fairly decent computer) and Valves ability to feed anything through it and terminate anyone from the service without warning or explanation rather takes all the fun out of what should be an entertainment package.

next gen steam will make it so that cheaters will have their game suddenly uninstalled and their ip not allowed to access steam for ten years.  Even if you didn't cheat.

STEAM IS A STEAMING PILE OF SH**!!!

And if Steam breaks updating; you can't play any games 'using' it.  It's ****.

Well, what the hell do you expect from the kiddies that play Counter-Strike?

And, for the sake of Valve they had better find a publisher, since I have not heard of a single person succesfuly buying and downloading HL2 off Steam

People have been asking me if I planned on doing a FPS style Trek or Robotech mod so I got curious... I had wanted to try making a HL2 mod but after all this bullox going around about steam and valve I aint gettting into that. However maybe HL1 is what I should be looking at. I mean is it still a viable option today? Are communitites still around for it or is it getting too outdated? (I never play fps's so I wouldn't know)

There are still communities, but the Source engine is so much more worth the effort for modern gamers' expectations that you'd be better just biting the bullet and going for HL2.

Icy armageddon and a few of the other WS peeps used steam, and it worked fine for them.

Of course, I still really don't like steam. At best it works, at worst it deletes your program files directory.

I certainly hope crap like Steam doesn't become common with developers. Besides, how can someone with 56k use it?

Well, see... if people would get a spine, or grow some ****ing balls, and say 'No. I won't use this program. I have a deep seated distrust of it, and It's not worth the headache, or risk of spending $50.00 on scrambled data that can/will never be decrypted, because they mistake my packet losses as an attempt at hacking." then companies would get the message.

But no, we get asshats like all of those script kiddies on the Valve forums who praise he idea as a 'triumph of modern technology, the likes of which shall revolutionize the modern world!!!111oneeleventeen' and ruin it for everyone. :doubt:

Yeah. I'm in a not-so-nice mood..... can you tell?
