Sorry to bump such an old topic, but I figured I might have a couple of snippets of info that may have slight relevance to the topic at hand.

Ribos actually originates from Dr Who, a planet involved in the search for something called the Key to Time (do a websearch for further information) - someone at Volition was probably a fan.

Ikeya is the name of an astronomer, Kaoru Ikeya. Probably most notable for comet hunting - again someone making the game might've come across it in their information gathering and decided to use it. Either that, or Ikeya hasn't discovered this star yet ;)

As far as I can tell, the other two (along with these examples) don't exist. However, there's still plenty of space, even local space, to be searched, and given that there are a couple of hundred years until this fictional universe springs into existance, there's not really anything to stop anyone from keeping these stars fictional.

I read somewhere that the real Capella is a binary star.
Or I could be mistaken

This looks like a great collection of information, but it seems that FS/FS2 does not follow these stellar attributes very closely. (i.e. Capella)

Capella is a double binary system with two pairs of stars. The two big stars are both yellow giants (about 70 million miles apart).

The other pair are both red dwarfs and are further out from the two main stars than pluto is from sol.
At that kind of distance you might even need a jump node to get there.

Maybe the other stars were destroyed/used up by the ancients?

Remember that the Ancients haven't been around for thousands of years, and those other stars existed at least 42 years ago.

The 2 red dwarves orbit at a distance of 0.17ly from the G-class pair, if anyone wants that information. Not a small distance, and would most likely be invisible from close in to Capella (as well as difficult to get to without a jump node, unless they're still within the initial gravitational/subspace envelope of the main Capella binary). Guess that leaves only the binary pair to sort out. Maybe we can fanwank something about one star being behind the other. With a 104 day orbital period it might just be workable ;)

Then maybe something happened and they got fused into one big star? ;)  Shivan tinkering?

I shall now ressurrect an argument I had with many people on the VBB, whether it is called Mirfax or Mirfak, however, I can't remember which side I was on, so without further ado...

IT'S MIRFAX!!!
