Google = enemy of the state? (POLITICS)
http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20050528/ap_on_go_pr_wh/secret_searches

[q]The Bush administration asked a federal appeals court Friday to restore its ability to compel Internet service providers to turn over information about their customers or subscribers as part of its fight against terrorism.

The legal filing with the 2nd Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals in New York comes amid a debate in Congress over renewal of the Patriot Act and whether to expand the FBI's power to seek records without the approval of a judge or grand jury.[/q]

EDIT; I can't help but wonder if adding a politics warning will attract trouble rather than avoid it........

This is sort of legal in Canada at the moment...although its probably involved in a court battle right now.  ISPs are required to turn over information on a customer...I believe they require a warrant or a special court order.

Does the US version of such a law have provisions or are they riding roughshod over freedoms again.

I gather they are trying to remove those provisions.  I can understand that the authorities may at times need to compel disclosure of information from ISPs; but I don't think it's right to remove the legal oversight that ensures there needs to be justification for it.

Incidentally, the Department of Homeland Security is involved in closing down bittorrent search sites..... I'm not sure quite how these are a threat to the nation, but it throws possible reasons behind this move into relief.

Exactly what I was thinking.  Someone forwarded to me the URL to one of the pages that was shut down.  I was sort of struck wondering why the homeland security department is shutting these things down.  I would think that it'd be the baliwack of the FBI and the FBI alone.  Just seems a little off base....

...and far too "Nigh****chish" for you B5 fans out there.

"Gestapo", you mean?

Incidentally, the Patriot Act is a blatant violation of the First Amendment.

Babylon 5 is a great series, but that is not really all what it is like.  It's more of a mix between Star Wars and B5.

We're not allowed to say nigh****ch on this forum?

Or is it a Homeland Security filter on the internet? :p

Nah, some of Bush's ideals are rather Sith-ish (fend for yourself to be strong, only with strength=freedom, toss in apocalyptic overtones) but he's functionally more like Clarke.

For all intents and purposes, the Patriot Act REPEALS the First Amendment.
