Intel to add DRM to new chips
http://www.digitmag.co.uk/news/index.cfm?NewsID=4915

[q]Microsoft and the entertainment industry's holy grail of controlling copyright through the motherboard has moved a step closer with Intel Corp. now embedding digital rights management within in its latest dual-core processor Pentium D and accompanying 945 chipset.

Officially launched worldwide on the May 26, the new offerings come DRM-enabled and will, at least in theory, allow copyright holders to prevent unauthorized copying and distribution of copyrighted materials from the motherboard rather than through the operating system as is currently the case.

More reason to favor AMD. Only for the moment, though.

Exactly. I bet someone will figure out how to crack it the day after it comes out. It happened with the PSP.

I doubt that even Macs are going to hold off against DRM for long. After all, how much of Apple does MS own?

Well, good for them.

Too bad you'll just end up with a case of a few hard core techies breaking the copy protection off, then everybody else distributing those.

Yea, I don't doubt that a day (or less) after these come out, somoene will be distributing an app to disable it. Not only that, but I'm sure AMD, for the moment at least, will not implement it.

If Intel implements this, AMD (or Apple) will have my guaranteed business as long as they refrain.

Still, it's a less the pleasant development.  Intel, despite their rather poor performance in the last couple of generations versus AMD, still pretty much rules the market.  And while the X2 buries the Pentium-D in performance, it's also a lot more expensive.  Intel's deploying their DRM quietly, and they are a lot more likely to achieve market penetration then AMD or Apple is.  Can't help but wonder if AMD and apple will be forced to follow suit.

Pardon my naivete, but why would AMD have to add DRM to compete with Intel?

If AMD does, I will never buy another PC... in fact, I'll learn to code, and to make my own hardware, and create a motherboard that runs on 6 3200+'s all running sync. >.>

drm doesnt do **** if your files dont have a copyright bit set. and only .01% of my mp3 files have those.and most of the ones that do were leagally downloaded anyway.

Yea, but that means people who buy off of iTunes or w/e = out of luck. Not only that, but AMD might have to put it on in order to get software manufacturer support.

Immediately, they don't.  The problem though, is that AMD doesn't have much market share, thus not a lot of practical say.  If content producers start making use of this DRM and enforcing it so that non-DRM enabled mobo's can't use DRM protected content, there's a big problem though.  Especially when you consider that one of the big proponents of DRM is microsoft.

If this catches on and they start producing software that can't run on non-DRM hardware - a distinct possibility because intel owns so much of the marketplace - AMD is faced with two choices.  Either implement DRM on their processors, or have processors which won't run protected content and software.  With their minimal market share, AMD isn't in a position to make demands or to make software/content producers make non-protected content - intel owns so much of the market that any losses due to not being able to run on AMD hardware is almost certainly going to be offset by casual piracy on Intel hardware being dettered.  Ends up being a situation of "comply or die sister, it's that simple."

worst case scenario?  Sure.  But we're talking Intel and Microsoft, not to mention all of hollywood and the RIAA - AMD, despite their benchmarks, just isn't a serious threat.

I think that AMD should invent a death star and threaten Microsoft into losing the DRM ****.  Freespace 2 might get a sudden patch that makes it need the legit thing!

AMD can barely afford to build new fab plants or advertising, let alone a death star.

Besides....what kind of idiot build a super-battle station that takes 16 years to build but can be destroyed by one x-wing and two torpedos?  Not to mention, what kind of idiot builds a battlestation that take 16 years and gets blown up by a kid with an x-wing and two torpedos, then builds ANOTHER one of the friggin things?
