Not really. It's only optimal in terms of download size. Since they're each individual subobjects, they could each use a seperate map and not hinder perfomance.

a year or so from now after I have finished fully integrated and bugfixed the materials system, someone get me to make a tarain engine for FS, I have some good ideas for one. I'm thinking useing a radial subdivision of the surface and updateing it every two or three seconds (would be better if it could take advantage of multi-threading) based on the player's position above the surface. the idea would be rather than a square grid your have the point directly below the player on the surface act as the center of a bunch of concintric circles with axiese spreading out acting as a polar grid, width of the circles and number of axies would be a function of altitude.
I've never seen this sort of implementation performed so I am quite interested in how this idea would work out. but I think it would provide the absolutely best method for both getting the most amount of detail near the player and culling unneeded geometry from rendering.

Mojo world used to be partially open source I think. Some interesting technology though.
Imagine real planets ingame, ie you can fly around the whole world as it generates on the fly. Something like that would be cool. :)

Hmm...can't remember the name, but it's the one with "The Forever Train" in Star Fox 64, isn't it?

Wait, wait! Macbeth?

good ol' shake-a-spear....i enjoyed blowing up that train; never quite understood how the train was such a threat though...

Bob...that method you describe sounds interesting, but how would texturing work? (not trying to point out a problem; i'm just curious to understand how it would work, heheh)

you mean do it the same way frontier or orbiter does it? so you can actually do a re-entry and such. that and some newtonian and you can make freespace an actual sim. perhaps an aerodynamics engine as well. gravity and actual ground unit support. id like 3d planets for orbital bombardment missions. the battle for vasuda for example.

lol...hey, he's just saying that the options could be there...doesnt mean everyone would have to play that way, or that it would be implemented into the main game

i suspect Bob might be flabbergasted by all that however, heheh

anyhow, the planet looks good....my unability to guess what planet it is isnt your fault; i havent looked at a starfox planet in some time :)

100 points for you. :)
Yeah, I'll take care of the light when I'm done with the surface.

Well, I think it was hard to guess. (And that is my fault... I placed only one light in the scene.... and I even placed it very bad. ;) )

Are you sure that's a Katina fighter in the 6th picture? *goes and tries to dig up an old screenshot*

[Edit] Well, I couldn't find a screenshot, but I caught another glimpse of the ship you were referring to in the 5th screenshot, and it looks a 'lil more like a Katina fighter. I guess I'm just used to seeing like 25 of them at once.

BTW, that Corneria does look a bit like Macbeth from SF64, but the clouds are what clued me into it being Corneria. [/Edit]

Uhm, we need a talented UV mapper for one model. I've tried it a few times, but I can't do it. :(

It's only one model...
