Is it me, or does the thunder in the nebula sound lackluster? It has the rumble, but not the strike. It would be real easy to upgrade those sounds, even though thunder in a gas cloud would probably sound different from what it sounds like on Earth.

I'm going to look for some thunder sound effects to replace the two sounds. Wow, two? No wonder why it sounds repetitive.

I found this free sound effect and replaced one of the two old sounds with it:

Well... There are no noises in space...
In real you would hear NOTHING. Only your own fighter...
But that would be boring...
So there is sound in Games and Movies...

Sound is transmitted by vibrations. If there are particles to vibrate, then sound would be transmitted. In a nebula there are particles to vibrate. Thus, there could be sound in the nebula, although how dense the nebula is would greatly affect how well sound would be transmitted across it.

A very dense nebula could transmit sound as well as an atmosphere, or even better (perhaps as well as water?), but you'd be rather dead in such a place - the shockwave from a missile would smash a fighter to pieces, as their warheads are in the kilotonne range (IIRC the Interceptor - or was it the MX-50 - had a 15kt warhead, making it roughly as powerful as the Hiroshima bomb). Ouch...

Some more sounds would be good, though - for a particularly violent nebula some louder/more ragged and powerful-sounding effects would be cool.

i dont really see nebulas as being dence at all. the particles are so spread out that i doubt they would carry sound vary far at all. tempurature and density are the key factors in determining how far sound can travel. i dont see nebulas having an atmosphere any denser than that of mars. but for the sake of coolness go ahead and add more thunder noise.

Exactly, it's just a game. It doesn't have to be realistic. :nervous:

Nebulas in real life.... not dense

By using your eyes you can conclude that freespace si definitley not real life.
actualy, mabye not.

Oh, I don't remember anymore, but I'm sure I wrote it down somewhere. If it has any importance, I'll try to find it.

Some nebulas are actually thousands of times more dense than our atmosphere. Let´s remember that some nebulas are infact star maternities, and the density needs to be high to create such a new star. I would venture in going further and saying thunder does occur, as such density and heat is bound to create eletromagnetic storms, thus creating thunder and lightning.
Also, a nebula is composed mostly of gaseous mater, thus creating "micro" atmospheres within itself. The only thing preventing that gas from spreading across open space is its own gravitational pull, or that of space bodies within it, like a star. But as long as the nebula exists, there would be what we call an atmosphere.

When people say there is no sound in space, they are mostly refering to the open space, where virtually no matter exists. The black part of space, so to speak. Obviously, nebulas are composed of matter, and all matter reverberates sound waves. Some more, some less. But they all all passible of carrying across sound waves.
Given the right circumstances, you can ever hear an echo. Echos are created by diferences in air (air is gas) pressure, caused by diferences of altitude, temperature, and wind speed. All of that is possible of occurring within a (certyain type of) nebula.
No Freespace 3 ?!? Oh, bugger...

remember that nebulas can be many light years across, and thus the gas would be spread pretty thin. of course pressure would be greater twards the interior but i still dont think it would be all that great. it would still be prety dence where new bodies such as protostars are froming. the fact is noone has seen a nebula and untill i see scientific data saying otherwise il stick to my hypothesies.

Yeah, normal nebulas are actually millions of times less dense than air. In reality, you couldn't even tell if you were in a nebula or not. It's the entire mass of a star spread over a volume that can be up to 100 lightyears. If you got into one where it was as dense or even denser, I don't think anything could survive the pressure or heat.

Hmmm....would be pretty crappy to have a game with no sound....

Hmm, I haven't found many 16 bit @ 22KHz quality files, lots of 8 bit and hits for sound fx CDs though.

Hmmm... you know what. I have a CD with a Thunderstorm on it. I'll see if I can dig it up and rip some of the sounds from there.
