Sure there are some similarities and if you look around at the sci-fi genre in general you see a ton of the same stories and plotlines and names used over and over again. Its the popular discourse of the genres both on TV, in theaters, and on the computer screen to use these elements over and over again.
this is quite true. i must say though that there is another sci-fi genre that stays away from

of this....this is my all time favourite....DUNE
in the later...it find enemies of its own race....sticks more to a reality of now instead of creating crazy other races to be the enemy (all hail humanity in otherwords)
though, if you go back into the days of the butlerian jihad..then youve got the "thinking machines" and the "titans"/"neo's" (cymecks) but, the thinking machines were created after the cymecks(human brains with machine bodies) took over the human race and got lazy...giving birth to the ever watching "Omnius" enlsaving humanity and the cymecks for about 1000 years....untill they both rise up and the humans come out victorius blah blah...
i think this to be one of the most realistic sci-fi worlds ever created ever....does anyone agree?
