Personally, I've always thought the Vasudans and Protoss were somewhat similar. Not sure why :wtf: But I do.

Using a really common fighter name between two games, and making humans in it does not a similarity make.

Ok, they're in space (starcraft only sometimes). They have aliens...they have humans...and it's sci fi.

By your logic practically every game ever made ripped off of Freespace 2. :wtf:

If the StarCraft Valkyrie is supposed to be a homage to something, I'd put my bets on some sort of Anime.  That would be in the Blizzard style.

"Valkyrie" is a pretty common name. It just sounds cool.
"The reason for this is that the original Fortran got so convoluted and extensive (10's of millions of lines of code) that no-one can actually figure out how it works, there's a massive project going on to decode the original Fortran and write a more modern system, but until then, the UK communication network is actually relying heavily on 35 year old Fortran that nobody understands." - Flipside

Starcaft always reminded me more of the Aliens universe more then the FS universe. Watch the movie(Aliens) then play the terran campain you'll see it.

I think it's more to the point than that:

In Norse myth, the Valkyries were group of women who scouted the battlefields and guided the best of the fallen warriors to Valhalla (the warriors afterlife, where they would train in preparation for Ragnarok or something I think).

In Starcraft (and FS), the Valkyrie is a woman who flies around the battlefield guiding (enemy) warriors into the afterlife.

I think the cutscene you're thinking of is in the Zerg campaign.

replace that with asatru religion and il agree with you. valkyrie are actually what the angels in christian mythology (dont you find it offensive when somone denounces a religion as mythology) are based off of. seeing as asatru predates christianity by several thousand years, they should get brownie points or something.

the battle criuser is funny "take it slow" "make it happen" if you dont know where they got that idea, your not a geek, leave youre computer and gadgets on my desk and pick up a jock strap and a cheerleader on your way out.

ok, i've thought of this before, but i must say, it all fits very well. we have terrans, the protoss as the vasudans (even the technology advancement is kinda noticable) and then we have the zerg. even their apearance with the zirglings is something kina like this...kinda....if you have ever played warhammer 40k then you would know of the tyranids. i havnt played that in so long but if i remember i always thought that they ripped of starcraft for them.

alos..anyone sayin that FS was ripped by SC has got to be joking....i am pretty sure that starcraft was made before FS anyway, therefopre predating the concept and being able to say that FS got the idea from SC..or perhaps it is just a coincidence...

thats what i think.... :)

SC was made in 97, FS1 in 98, and FS2 in 99 :p

thanks for that UT :)

so like i said then...the storry was either concieved off SC..which i forgot to point out....u know the whole...xel naga/ancients connections.

but yea, i think it is just a coincidence since it takes years to make games...

Thats not much more than a toothpick to stand on.  Sure there are some similarities and if you look around at the sci-fi genre in general you see a ton of the same stories and plotlines and names used over and over again.  Its the popular discourse of the genres both on TV, in theaters, and on the computer screen to use these elements over and over again.

this is quite true. i must say though that there is another sci-fi genre that stays away from alot of this....this is my all time favourite....DUNE

in the later...it find enemies of its own race....sticks more to a reality of now instead of creating crazy other races to be the enemy (all hail humanity in otherwords)

though, if you go back into the days of the butlerian jihad..then youve got the "thinking machines" and the "titans"/"neo's" (cymecks) but, the thinking machines were created after the cymecks(human brains with machine bodies) took over the human race and got lazy...giving birth to the ever watching "Omnius" enlsaving humanity and the cymecks for about 1000 years....untill they both rise up and the humans come out victorius blah blah...

i think this to be one of the most realistic sci-fi worlds ever created ever....does anyone agree?

Now, I dunno about you guys, but I figure the Valk (SC) got it's name from the VF-1 Valkyrie of Macross/Robotech fame. Can't be arsed with this roundabout shieldmaiden rubbish. :D

Linkds between Starcraft and Freespace
hmm...perhaps there is no conection with the name and the unit....why do the makers of the game have to do this? i cant see why they cant go and call soemthing a poo haler even though its a ship thats shoots stuff....i mean...not everything ahs to be based of something else....

Actually the movie he's talking about is Aliens, 1986 sci-fi flick by James Cameron.  Still, that cutscene did remind me of both Alien and Aliens when I saw it, so I see where he's coming at.

And I agree with the Terran campaign reference, too.  First time I played through it, the Mar Sara missions just felt evil and an Alien-style atmosphere anyway.
Spoon - I stand in awe by your flawless fredding. Truely, never before have I witnessed such magnificant display of beamz.
Axem -  I don't know what I'll do with my life now. Maybe I'll become a Nun, or take up Macrame. But where ever I go... I will remember you!
Axem - Sorry to post again when I said I was leaving for good, but something was nagging me. I don't want to say it in a way that shames the campaign but I think we can all agree it is actually.. incomplete. It is missing... Voice Acting.
Quanto - I for one would love to lend my beautiful singing voice into this wholesome project.
Nuclear1 - I want a duet.
AndrewofDoom - Make it a trio!

Its the dropship pilots that seal it for me. Click on them a couple of times and they start doing shameless rip offs of pheros'(sp, the dropship pilot in Aliens) lines.

Er, I think what he means is that the cutscene in starcraft that most screams "Aliens" is Battle on the Amerigo, which is part of the zerg campagin.
