Incredible. Except I liked the dark cockpit.

Yeah.. the textures are almost TOO clean. It looks a lot more like a GI Joe toy than a real fighter, although I'm not exactly sure why.

It looks like a toy because the lines are too "deep", try lightening them a little and reducing their width. Use real aircraft for reference if it helps and for mercy's sake keep it up!!

No no, if he used real aircraft it would be robin's-egg blue all over, perhaps slightly darker on the top, and there'd be no lines on it, as bumps and ridges would play merry hell with aerodynamics.
WE ARE HARD LIGHT PRODUCTIONS. YOU WILL LOWER YOUR FIREWALLS AND SURRENDER YOUR KEYBOARDS. WE WILL ADD YOUR INTELLECTUAL AND VERNACULAR DISTINCTIVENESS TO OUR OWN. YOUR FORUMS WILL ADAPT TO SERVICE US. RESISTANCE IS FUTILE.

The textures would look better if a minor fill was done to give the metal the look of stress lines. (i.e. look at Volition's textures and look at the grain lines of the metallic hull)

I think that for a plane in FS universe, the aerodynamism isn't really important, because the shield will suffr all the contraints.
For my part, I would apply a metalic layer over the whole thing (with a very low opacity of course, between 5 and 10) to make it look less "plastic".

I'm trying to do that, but as I said it's the first time I ever do a fighter skin from scratch - so I'm taking an incremental approach.

[edit: if anyone knows of good tutorials for doing this on Paint Shop Pro, please tell me  ]

Actually, that's wrong.   Notice in the nebula that you can see contrails coming off the tips of the wings on most fighters? That wouldn't happen if the nebular gas was impacting the sheild and not the hull.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

That is actually a little interesting... if the shield stops solid projectiles like missiles and kinetic rounds then it has to be opaque to solid matter, and if its blocking other primary shots it has to be opaque to the particles that make up the energy shots (photons for laser beams, various ions for particle accellerator guns) Either way if a shield is going to defend against weapons it OUGHT to be pushing the nebula gasses away too. The other confusing thing, now that I think about it... if beams are laser weapons(photon beam cannon) , then if they can block lasers like the Subach they should block beams too.
If it aint broke, break it!

Lookin good.  If the textures are as good as the model, it will be a fine ship indeed

Then I guess the same can be said for pilots who love to bang their fighters against capital ships and other fighters then. The damage from the collision should impact on the fighter shields, not the hull.

i've explained why beams are not blocked on the VBB a long time ago... want me to explain it again?

I wasn't talking about the colors of a RL plane, just the way the lines between surfaces on the body look.

Hmmmm, this is probably even more confusing
