"The reason for this is that the original Fortran got so convoluted and extensive (10's of millions of lines of code) that no-one can actually figure out how it works, there's a massive project going on to decode the original Fortran and write a more modern system, but until then, the UK communication network is actually relying heavily on 35 year old Fortran that nobody understands." - Flipside

Interesting thought -

Is it that it damages their brain, or is it that their brain evolves to be better suited to watching TV than interacting with people?

That and one other reason. It also is completly mindless. Often times children (and some adults) just watch stuff for the sake of watching it.

I'd be willing to bet that excessive TV-watching is also contributing to a shortening attention span.

One summer when I was younger I watched TV for the entire three months. When I got back to school, I had trouble doing basic addition/subtraction, and had almost completely forgotten multiplying and division.

I can't watch TV most of the time...its background noise only.  The Weather Network is usually my channel :)

On occasion I will watch a show...Stargate, Atlantis, Charlie Jade, and Battlestar when they are on.  Thats it.

TV is a useful tool, but its not a babysitter.  Thats the problem.

Some parents have tendencies to use the TV as a babysitter. Not all, but some.

I'd quote Bill Hicks, but I've forgotten the line... :o

No surprises though. I don't watch much television at all any more - most of it's too stupid. I'll watch the news, the Simpsons, the odd documentary and a bit of comedy, and that's it.

I watch T.V. in spurts, I'll watch it for a while (about a week) then I'll take about a month or two of just watching new episodes of shows like stargate and the family guy.  Otherwise the rest is crap to me, well with exception of the history channel and the news.

On a side note, apparently there's a correlation between breastfeeding and a higher IQ.

Yeah.  I read that report and said the same thing.  But apparently its true.

Breastfeeding, classical music, and a whole bunch of other things influence the IQ level of a developing child.  With the music, even a developing child in the womb actually benefits.  I guess in the last stages before birth, the ears start to work and the brain is nearly to the point where it can start interpreting the sounds.

Breast milk has long been known to be best for the developing child as it contains all kinds of nutrients that can't be found in formula.

I've heard evidence of the "Mozart Effect" before but all experiments seem to show that it's a very short term but real effect.

Newton Minnow said, "Television is a vast wasteland."

It was true when he stated it the 60's and is true today. He may have been on the FCC, but he was way ahead of his time with that remark. Most of the programming on the air rots your brain. Now how am I going to change this?
