if you want bump maps to look good, set them to very low settings. i usually use 0.01 amp, sometimes 0.02. for that pathetic AWACS picture i made, 0.01 was still too much ,so i embossed a copy of the texture and turned down the contrast then used it for bump mapping.

I think I should mention at this point to you guys that I use 3DX, it doensn't automatically convert bump-maps to grayscale (although I'll try it out manuelly).

how is that possible? does the bump map show color with it? then if you use a texture and bump mapping will the colors will be twice as saturated?

excactly. that is why you should keep it low, unless you want it to look that way.
