Problems with Freespace2 installation. Please Help!!
I'm having a having a problem installing Freespace 2. When I put in the CD, it revs up then stops. THere isn't any autorun popping up plus the setup file on the disc won't run either. It'll just rev and stop. Can anyone help me? I"m running on Windows XP media center edition w/ a Pentium 4 and Radeon X300. Please help.

both of my cd drives recognize the disk and the label shows up instead of being "no disk in drive". I can see the files but I can't open the Setup.exe or the autorun. I've tried compatibility, even though I don't completely understand how it works.

I've tried on the Admin account and that doesn't work either. It works another computer w/ WinXP but it's a P.O.S. so I'm not installing it

That happened to us in the computer lab earlier this year.  It turned out to be a bad CD drive*.  See if any other CDs work in it.

*I don't think they've gotten around to replacing it yet, either. ;)

It's only happened to one other game, Caesars 3.  One drive is a DVD-Rom and the other is a DVD RW

The EXACT same thing happens to me, which is why i'm left with an absolutely deformed Freespace2 Folder, as i'm too scared that, should i uninstall to clear out all the junk, i won't be able to install again. I've managed to get it working in the past when it's done this...but i honestly can't remember how i did it...hmmm...just going out on a whim here, but do you happen to have Decent: Freespace installed on your computer at the moment...?

Rename your old FS2 folder. Make a new one. Copy across the following VP files

# root_fs2.vp
# sparky_fs2.vp
# sparky_hi_fs2.vp
# stu_fs2.vp
# tango1_fs2.vp
# tango2_fs2.vp
# tango3_fs2.vp
# smarty_fs2.vp
# warble_fs2.vp

Then copy these files across.

Fred2.exe
FS2.exe
Freespace2.exe

FS2uninst.dll
Patchw32.dll
UpdateLauncher.exe (I doubt you need this but you might as well have it. )

Then make a new folder called Data. Copy across the contents of Data\Players and the following files from \Data

multi.cfg
multi.log

And you're done.

Best thing about doing it this way is that if it screws something up you can always just copy them all back :)

Problems with Freespace2 installation
Hmm, im suffering from the same problem as you guys :(
My drives will read the CD though, but autoplay wont run. I managed to get freespace 2 installed by using the ISO's from freespacezone.com, which is down now at the moment. If you own the CD's, just make ISO's using Alcohol 120%, and mount them with it or with Daemon Tools. Both work fine. After you have mounted them you can install freespace without problems.

BTW, does anyone know what to do about the CD problems? It's very annoying, I got the problem with almost every cd?

Hey Gapie. Unfortunately it really sounds to me like you're experiencing a serious hardware problem... internal CD drives should be pretty cheap these days though, would you mind trying your hand at installing one? :)

Hehe, I have been beamed on to HLPBB already by Karajorma  But I've got 2 drives on my system, a CD/DVD-rom drive and a CD/DVD writer. Both work fine, I can burn stuff from CD to CD, I can play music cds with both of 'em, etc etc. Autoplay wont work however, and Windows explorer doesnt recognize when I switch the CD. So its totally Windows related. Windows =  I will probably try to reinstall
XP at some time, but heck, I dont need to use the CD's that often.

Yeah. The links on freespacezone are down at the moment unfortunately.

Have you tried making an ISO? Have you tried copying the files to your hard drive manually and installing from there?

Problems with Freespace2 installation
Cut and paste from my FAQ.

What is FS2_Open? What is the SCP?

From the time it became apparent that there would be no FS3 the most repeated complaint the community had was that Volition wouldn't release the source code so that the community could work on it themselves
Quite a while after the release of FS2 [V] finally did the decent thing and released the code. It was immediately leapt upon by almost every person who could program (and some who couldn't and learnt in order to take advantage of it). An organisation was set up called The Source Code Project (SCP) who took the code with the intention of making Freespace 2 better. The product of their work was called FS2_Open.
FS2_Open is not FS3. Instead it is a replacement for the Freespace 2 engine, a sort of super mod for FreeSpace 2 which improves it no end. The idea is that by running FS2_Open you can play the Freespace 2 main campaign and all the Freespace 2 mods with better graphics. In addition to this improvements have been made to several of the games basics to add new kinds of weapons and missions that couldn't be done before. These improvements won't show up in the main campaign but will show up in special "Made for SCP" mods and campaigns.
The differences between FS2 retail and FS2_Open are breathtaking. It is almost like playing a new game. The project is not finished however and it continues to astound the community with every release.
More information on FS2_Open and the SCP can be found in various places in this FAQ. Since the SCP influences almost all things Freespace related information about it can not be lumped together in one place.
If you wish to look into the SCP the best places to start are their website and the SCP forum on HLP. You will of course need a working copy of FreeSpace 2 in order to get the SCP to work

Meh, ISO making is simple. Download Alcohol 120%here
, install it, use the ISO making wizard (I didnt have to reboot PC for that) and make the ISO's. All 3 cds though, will require a lot of space (2 gig). Then mount them using alcohol or daemon tools, and use the virtual CD's to install freespace 2. If this is unclear just PM me and ill mail some screenshots or something :)

Makes sense.

1. What would an Iso do?

2. where can I get freespace2 open if I ever get my game working?

EDIT:nevermind on the ISo

Problems with Freespace2 installation
1. :Basically, an ISO is a Copy of the CD to your hard disk, but it doesnt copy the files but the bits on the surface of the CD. So you have the whole CD on your harddisk, all the bits, but you cant use it that way. So you use a virtual drive program, aka Alcohol 120% or Daemon Tools,  to mount the ISO's. Your computer will then see the ISO's as a CD in a   drive, and then use the virtual CD's to install freespace.

2. Dunno. Ask karajorma ;)

Edit: didnt see your edit :(
