Yes, another pointless opinion thread.  Started largely because I'm bored off my tits tonight.... post your favourite games* of all time, for those of us who have not played them.

My vote would be for Startopia

It's a management game (zzz) set in space (yay?) with a quirky sense of Hitchhikers-style humour (yay!), made by the sadly closed down Muckyfoot.  IMO it's the pinnacle of that style of game; the graphics are still more than good enough, it's colourful and full of personality, and the gameplay mechanics are spot on.

Best of all, it's available for about a tenner nowadays.

*games plural because otherwise it'd likely be mainly Freespace.

One of the best examples of storyline integration that I have ever seen - even though it may make me seem traitorous, it surpasses Freespace by far in it's quality and the ability to keep you engaged for hours, just to find out what happens next.
"Blessed be the FREDder that knows his sexps."
"Cursed be the FREDder that trusts FRED2_Open."
Dreamed of much, accomplished little. :(

You might as well have a poll with one option.

But aside from freespace, I migrated over here from the descent forums, so #2 would be d3.

Seconded.  I remember, way back in the day on my 33MHz 486 DX/2 I would play that game all day long.  It was the partware version, so I could only go up to episode 20 before it was over.  I absolutely hated not being able to continue, and I hated it even more when I couldn't get the rest, because it wasn't published over the shelf.  And now, it cant be run anymore because of machine speed being too high :(.

That game was full of dark and decitful people, and the plot was always thrilling.  With lines like "Mission overwith, I'm going to bed.", followed coldly by "With whom?" shows the general attitude of the game.  The soundtrack was also excellent for the time.  Ahh, the memories...

Perfect Dark and Halo because they are primarily responsible for the introduction of good FPS to consoles.

IMHO, I love Descent 3 for its online multiplayer.

Freespace is awesome because it is very easy to mod.

The Day of the Tentacle. 'Nuff said.

The best game ever?

That would be Final Fantasy III (US)/FF 6 (Jap).

Incredible - that's the only word that can describe this game.
It's damn long. It look pretty well, even though it's only a SNES game.
The story is the very very good. And the game is damn long.
It's like an (very) interacive movie.

My second choice: Wing Commander III
Wow... what a game. The graphics look outdated, but the movies are still great. (Yeah, the compression looks horrible...)
The story isn't that great, only good, but the feeling created by the atmosphere is perfect.

Part IV was nice too, but I like the third part better.

And on rank three is StarCraft:
The cutscenes were nice. The graphics never looked very good, but hey, it's the ultimate multiplayer game.
I could play it every day... all day.
But I try not to play it anymore... I kinda get addicted very fast. ;)

Hard to say. I spent an awful amount of time on Red Alert, but I wouldn't consider it the best game ever. Same for FS2, and I don't consider it any better than WingCo4, Tie Fighter or IW2.
I kindda loved the rather unknown Shadow of the Horned Rat. I played UFO for 6 months until I beat it... IOremember being completly under Ishar3's charm, way, way back then. And Diablo (the first one), it was moody as hell. Duke Nukem3D rocked my boat for a long time, so did doom and heretic before. But there was also Indi and the last crusade, and indi and the fate of atlantis, which were awesome. Can't forget Lotus3, then Pod and Fatal Racing, even if racing games aren't my favourites. Ultimate Body Blows, Mortal Kombat, DoA3? Gunship2000? Civilisation? Setllers or Conquest of the New World? Alone in the Dark? Battle Isle2? The fabulous Lands of Lore or Eye of the Beholder2? Warcraft or Command and Conquer? Really, the best of the best? How could I say? I've been around since before VGA replaced EGA, I've played too many awesome games, I must forget many, like Powermonger or Populous, or Little Big Adventure!

So if I absolutly have to choose one... Joust! the first game I ever bought with my own money :D

What about Digger?  Or maybe alleycat?  Or Sopwith?  Or Secret Agent Man?  Commander Keen?

No, I didnt like those games.

BTW, Whiplash was better than Fatal Racing ;).

Fatal Racing having 100 or so tracks??  AFAIK, it was 24, and exactly 24.  Are we thinking of the same game?

BTW:  The Coffin Run > All other tracks.

Was indeed 24 or something, at the begining. Then you unlocked the pro cup, and then the final cup (fatal cup or something, I suppose, can't remember). Ok, that's not 100, that's 75.
Last cup had mobile springboards, vertical scorkcrews and other completly stupid but insanely fun tracks.

Or maybe you're thinking Ultimate Race, which was cool looking but lame.

Older games are teh l33t.

Adventure, Zork (or anything from Infocom), King's Quest (or anything from Sierra up until around 1996), X-Wing, TIE Fighter, X-COM, Riven, Freespace.

Though I think Tetris has a strong case for best game ever.  Or at least for most time wasted and most number of clones made. :p

That's not what I remember.  That's not what I remember at all.  Either the US version was gimped, or you are mixing different games together.  In Whiplash, I don't remember nearly as many tracks.  There were eight in each cup, one for each sponsor (car).  The third cup, which was hidden, was full of stupid things that looked like they were just frikkin odd.  I remember one that was a 4 way suicide clover thing, and it was just full of utter nonsense.

Sorry, me thinks that would be solitaire or deminer :p

Suddy: Don't know, I remember it that way, I might be wrong, but I don't think I am. My version was pretty special tho, it was a voodoo2 only version, that came with the card and you could not get anywhere else, it was full of eye candy that you didn't have with the regular version.
I have no idea what whiplash is, btw.

Fatal Racing, AKA Whiplash.  Is this what you have?  I did some poking around, and there was said to be a special Windows 98 version of Whiplash/Fatal Racing available, but information is scarce.  This is probably why you have more tracks.
