:wtf: I just got 1 gig of RAM, for things like HL2, BF2, and fs2_open.

And you're telling me I need it to run Windows minimally? :wtf:

I doubt it. MS typically have low minimum memory requirements for their OSs. So low one might even think that they were making it up.

Who in their right mind would run Windows 2000 DataCenter on 128Mb of RAM for instance?

I've seen XP machines run on early P2s with 128 MB of RAM. Granted they were extremely slow........

And I remember VB6. It was the first programming language I learned. Granted I didn't learn a whole lot and I forgot all of it. :p
"The reason for this is that the original Fortran got so convoluted and extensive (10's of millions of lines of code) that no-one can actually figure out how it works, there's a massive project going on to decode the original Fortran and write a more modern system, but until then, the UK communication network is actually relying heavily on 35 year old Fortran that nobody understands." - Flipside

Drop that down to 64 mb of ram and a 300 something mhz p2, thats what some of the teacher workstations at my school run.  Most student ones are p4's with 512mb of RAM.:p

Windows "Vista" supposadly will require hardware acceleration - JUST TO RUN THE DESKTOP. You know why? Because they're adding tons of useless crap, like windows that flutter in a virtual breeze when you click them, 3D icons, etc.

and just how many PCs running XP these days have no hardware acceleration capability whatsoever?

Yeah, I'd rather not have all my hardware acceleration being used to draw a directory I've got open. :wtf:

Does the Windows Classic theme really make that much of a difference in speed over the default XP themes?

I have no problem with hardware acceleration being utilized, it's when it's necessary to keep a decent framerate in Windows, with no apparent major UI improvements, that's what I don't like.

Ah well, everyone will be able to ditch Windows soon anyway.  When Apple switch to Intel next year, there will be a whole new version of OS X for everyone to enjoy.

No more viruses or security worries, it's the way forward...

The hardware-accelerated features of Windows Vista are completely optional. MS isn't that stupid, you know. At the low end of display greebles, WinVis (?) won't require any more graphics power than XP or 2k, from what I understand.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

I honestly doubt that anything at the low end of being able to run Longhorn/Vista/whatever would not have some kind of hardware graphics accelerator...

[color=66ff00]Sex Panther - it smells like gasoline.

Yeah, X11 (Linux gui daemon) has had the facility to use accelleration for some time now. It's a bit flakey due to non-open drivers though.

That's not the fault of the non-open drivers but rather the lack of overall stability in Linux development.

It's flakey 'cause ATM it's more of a hack extension on top of X11.

XGL should provide for decent acceleration on X11.

The last major release, XP, went on sale in October 2001.

Holy cow! I never realised XP was that old!

And I hope they get sued over 'Vista' that would make my day ;)
