Independence war 2...
Has anybody managed to play it? I got the game and I relize it's some kid and the controls are bloody confusing. I'm threatning to rip if off my HD.

I dunno if I should give it another chance once I get my joystick back to work. Anybody else played this game? I only tried it so I can play another game that's a space sim, which sadly there aren't too many. :(

It's really a fun game, once you get used to it. You have to get used to the Boom and Zoom gameplay though.

There actually used to be an IWar2 forum here, but the community died out, so it closed down.

It has great potential, but the trick is getting the hang of the control and physics, as well as being prepared to put the time in to get the decent tech etc. It does take a little while to get up to speed.

It takes time to get used to.  circle strafe is your friend.

Keep playing; it gets better once you get the hang of it.  Not as good as FS2 IMO, but still good.

I liked IW2 a lot, although FS2 was overall better. The interface is no good though and you need to persist with the game for a while to get the hang of it. Note that the keys can be remapped (first thing I did when I got the game), although it's cumbersome to do it.

That's one great game; qualitywise it surpasses pretty much every other space-sim in existance; the graphics are still great by todays standards. However, the story isn't too ingenious and the characters are extremely stereotypical, the predecessor was much more exciting on that part.

If you need to get used to the controls try out the instant action. It's a bit hard for starters, but once you get the hang of it you wouldn't want it to have it any other way.

hi i've play IW2 alot, even made a few mods for it.  The hardest part is getting used to the controls, but if you can figure out how to edit them to your standards, then it should make life a whole lot easier.  I can make it up to Trouble With Gunstars (mission 6, iirc) without getting killed.  that mission is a pain though :p

Using keyboard i use w,a,s,d for throttle and u,h,j,k for pitch and yaw.  t is target, r is target closest hostile, y is subtarget, i is LDSi quickfire, space is fire current weapon, o is undock, [ is next weapon, ] is next secondary, enter is next primary, backspace is next secondary.

As for the story, the first few missions (when youre a kid) are just there to familiarize yourself with the basic controls, autopilot, and combat.  you progress on as an adult for the rest of the game.  The story is pretty good, but the ending is rushed thanks to publisher deadlines,  there is a mod that lets you continue in free-form mode once the story ends and gives you access anywhere.  The best place to look for mods is http://www.i-war2.com

Game really needs a time compression option though. By the last few missions it takes bloody ages to get anywhere.

You people...

I had the controls fully memorized and mastered by the second hour of the game.

And you only play as a kid for, what, the first 30 minutes?

I just beat the game a couple of weeks back. Funny thing is how I got the game a couple of years ago, but didn't get very far because of the difficulty. The game gets much more fun after you get decent weapons and ships though.

I love my heavy corvette. :D

No way, the Adv. Corvette is the way forward, fast and it's possible to tool it up to the gills with heavy weapons once you get access to them.

Plus those mining lasers pack a real punch ;)

Patcom + 5x Gatlings + Deadshots = ownage
Patcom + 5x Rapid Fire PBC + Deadshots = ownage
Patcom + 5x Heavy PBC + Deadshots = ownage
Patcom + 3x Neutron PBCs + 2x Cutting Beams  + Deadshots = ownage
basically:
Patcom + weaponary = ownage.

anyway the game starts getting alot easier by the time you get the T-Fighters (mission 4), by then you have the controls down and some decent equipment.

my mods:
Repair Ship Mod
Cargo Splode Mod

you'll need the latest patch (14.6) and the Multimod mod found here: http://www.i-war2.com/downloads/multimod.zip

Seconded. The interface is comfortably simple, and the gameplay is the closest to FS2 than any game i've ever played. :D

I prefer a patcom with Anti-matter and neutron pbc's. :D

There's only one manuever you really need to master to wtfpwn enemy ships, too: Sliding.

Honestly, I can't imagine where you guys get the idea that I-War 2's interface is difficult.

the best maneuver is the LDS double-tap.  instant course correction.  just make sure not to leave it on for too long or else you get nailed by LDSi missiles.  its also somewhat useless near stations and l-points.

I was mainly referring to the HUD/command menus, which can be a pain to use and should have been in a separate window with mouse control, and the fact that you can only save the game at a base means that you end up wasting a lot of time going back and forth. Also, a few little things like the target list cycling back to the top when you reach the end of it would have been very convenient. The actual ship controls work quite well after everything is set up properly though.

The default key setup is weird, but then again, I have hardly ever seen a game that has a good default control scheme. I never play anything without first customizing the controls and other things to my liking anyway.

The combat is sort of like an FPS in slow motion actually, since circle strafing is what you do most of the time.

IW2 is a great game, sadly I think I've only completed it once, twice at most. It really does not have any replay value. :(

The problem i had with EoC was that at the end i didnt have all the goodies like bolot on turrets and things, and alot of things seem to do nothing. Still a great game, except for that damned gunstar mission and the last one...

A Heavy Corvette equipped with all beams can turn any large ship into scrap in seconds.  There isn't much unmodded replay value, to be fair; it's not a very dynamic economy, so you end up just collecting money and stuff for the sake of it - stuff like the fleet mod helps, though.

@Cobra: go wash your brain out with soap.
