Major air disaster in Toronto!
Airbus A340 crashes at Toronto's Pearson International Airport and slams into a nearby ravine narrowly missing Highway 401.

Read the stories here:

http://www.cbc.ca/story/canada/national/2005/08/02/pearson-plane050802.html

This is pretty close to home for me...I've traveled along the highway in that picture a thousand times (usually gawking at the airplanes passing overhead).

Sounds like weather may have been an issue.

They are saying on the news right now that at least some people were able to escape the plane...a miracle to be sure. This is just so close to home...

Sounds pretty scary.  Accidents close to home are always nerve-wracking.

On a lighter note, this sentence struck me as pretty funny:
Quote
At mid-afternoon Tuesday, a spokesperson with the Greater Toronto Airports Authority said lightning was causing technical problems with the airport's lightning-detection system.

The reports seem to say that there were no casualties which is good.

As for that quote about the lightning detector. They've got to be joking. A lightning detector that is screwed up by lightning? :wtf:

Has the lighting detector turned evil and began a campaign of terror against its human masters? No? Shame.

Good to hear that no one was hurt.

With the sorts of storms we've had around here in the last few weeks...I almost wouldn't be surprised that there were technical difficulties.

Reports on CityTV are now saying that most or all of the passengers escaped, that the plane came down in bad weather, that it was probably hit by lightning, the internal lights went off, and that the plane hit the runway hard...possibly blowing out the tires.

They are saying about 30-40 people are being sent to nearby hospitals with injuries but they have already interviewed many people on TV...seemingly ok although shaken up.

One other witness said she thought the plane had been struck by lightning.

Uhh we get nasty frontlines (warm fronts, coldfronts, etc.) that come through the area and create all sorts of "popcorn" thunderstorms.  One minute its dark, raining, and there is lightning everywhere, and the next minute is all clearing out.

Welcome to Southern Ontario...where the weather changes unpredictably in the most extreme ways.

It sure looked like nobody escaped with the pictures they were showing on TV when I wrote this...

Leave the thread in the spirit that it was posted in.  A chronological history if you will.

From an article titled 'All I Could Do Was Pray' (emphasis mine):

Quote
The chairman of Air France, Jean-Cyril Spinetta, told reporters in France: "I don't know if we should speak of a miracle, but we can certainly speak of . . . the professionalism of the crew."

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

I was thinking it was a bit of a triumph for the airline/aircrafts' safety procedures, myself.
