BTW: The Xbox 360 launch price is equal to the PS2 and Xbox launch prices.

$60 for a game? Give me a break. And they wonder why piracy of games has been on the rise over the years........
"The reason for this is that the original Fortran got so convoluted and extensive (10's of millions of lines of code) that no-one can actually figure out how it works, there's a massive project going on to decode the original Fortran and write a more modern system, but until then, the UK communication network is actually relying heavily on 35 year old Fortran that nobody understands." - Flipside

$400 for the console and $80 (AUD) for a game?

Sounds pretty normal to me... isn't that what most PC games cost?

$80 (AUD) is about right for a PC game, yeah. Although it does depend where you go shopping.

I still think that's far too much though.

No. PC games are much cheaper because the games don't have to make up for a loss on the platform, considering the platform is worth every bit as much as someone pays for it.

PC games aren't cheaper are they? $80 AUD is about £34 BP and that's what I'd expect to pay for most high street games.

Well, most PC games are cheaper. However, "blockbuster" games like Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 run for the same price as new console games, $50.

When doom 3 first came out I am pretty sure it did cost $60 US. But about a month late it dropped to a meager $45 or so.

That's the main reason I don't do consoles or even PC games much anymore. They simply cost me too much. $50 is a month's worth or more of pocket money.

That's about $400 Canadian plus around $70 for new games.

Jesus, what kid has that much money to throw around?

I know what you mean. I haven't bought a game in years. I just aquire them through other means.

Console price seems to be the expected (albeit I'd never actually pay launch price for any console, becuase that's when they're being sold for silly money), games strike me as being a bit pricey.  I'm not sure what the general US games cost is, but over here it's pretty easy to get them for £30-35 provided you shop around.

If they were to sell titles for £60 UK* - and I doubt they will - they'd be screwing themselves.... even £50 is chancing it.  Regardless of the console being a loss leader, people won't accept paying too much for games (particularly as the hefty console investment they make in buying the machine is worthless until they get a game).  (incidentally, AFAIK Microsofts Xbox department is still making a loss... unsurprising given it was basically a shoe-in to get them into the console market)

I have to admit being dissapointed the way console launches are going; it'd be nice if they still chucked in a game as the bog-standard model.  I think the PS may have started the trend of having the bare minimum, although I'm not sure.

*based around the usual launch price being about equal to the dollar value, making it 1.5 times more expensive in actual money by rough exchange rate

Looks like it's time to start saving...

Also, new computer games cost around 350-550sek here (depending on where you buy it and what game it is), whilst new console games range from 450-700sek. Good prices is around 400sek and 550 for a console games, but most stores charge about 100sek more, so I order my games and get them sent by mail.

I remember when you could walk into a computer store and buy a brand new game for $45 US (that's the price I got FS2 for, right off the shelf).

Now you're lucky to get a brand new game, sans anything but a small box and a CD and if you're lucky, CD case (becaus HL2 shipped with 5 slip covers :wtf: ), all for $60-$70 - which is just ****ing nuts.
