What's This? A PC Problem??
Yea. Pretty interesting one. I guess my HD(s) are 'bout to explode...

When I open 'my computer', the window opens, but it doesn't show the drive icons. It's plain white window. But the little stupid flashlight is moving on the window, searching the drives.

So, my HD(s) are soon history? The computer boots up normally and I can use Firefox and Messenger. OS is WinME (yea, it's bad, I know).

Tried googling this, but found nothing similar.  :sigh:

EDIT
Firefox and Messenger are on drive C, and they work.
NFS Underground 2 is on D and WinRAR on C, but they don't work.
...****!

EDIT2
I can browse C & D drives with Window MS DOS prompt. So is this a Windows problem rather than broken HDs??

Windows reinstall time. After that, run full chkdsk on the hard drives.

I doubt its your hard drives. It is definately windows ME. I see **** like this all the time when I am fixing computers with ME on it. I would highly suggest up/down grading to a different OS. Heck, I would take 95 over ME any day.

Yea, I guess it's this bloody ME.

If the HDs were dying, the problem would exists in DOS prompt and in win debug mode, right?

Well, I'll play around a little bit more with this problem, though I doubt anything helps. Then it's time to find a newer OS.

Thanks. :)

OS is WinME

I think that's your problem. WinME is a really twitchy OS.

Get a real OS. :) At the very least get Windows XP (personally I prefer Windows 2000, but they are essentially the same thing anyway).

You got it right Maeg, ME got executed by NATO. The one I have, is the last of the kind. :D

I think I'll move to Win2000. Don't think that my PC (Celeron 950, 192RAM) can handle XP, though I'll be getting more RAM soon.

If it runs W2k, it runs XP. You will want to make sure you have at least 256 MB RAM if you want to play some games though, regardless of which OS you get.

Ok. RAM, XP and a new HD too. That should do it. Thanks again all.

I don't know why everyone says ME is bad. I have found it to be much more stable than 98SE. I used it without any trouble for two years and still have it on my secondary computer. The only problem is that system restore keeps making checkpoints even if it's disabled, but I just clean out that restore directory every now and then. Might be one of those word of mouth things, where everyone says something is bad only because they notice that everyone else is saying so.

That being said, 2000 and XP are far better OSs. The only reason I use ME on that computer is for several older games, the Creative SB16 emulation and the Yamaha SYXG50 driver, none of which work correctly with XP.

I've had diffirent experiences. 98SE is more stable than ME. Though ME hasn't given that much of trouble that you would think.  I only installed ME because some programs didn't work on 98.

[color=66ff00]Primus if I were you I'd save for a bit and get a relatively up to date platform. Significantly powerful chips and mobo's crammed full of features are available for not-a-lot these days.

It's better than spending cash trying to fix up a legacy system.
