Is there ANY possible way, other than swithcing ISP's or blowing up stuff, to get around this inconceivable nuisance to create an internet game server.

[color=66ff00]Eh? How is DHCP entering into it?

No one can see any game server I create out of my home pc over the internet.  Yes, I have forwarded the needed ports to my router.

[color=66ff00]You're speaking of your ISP's DHCP server then?

Irrespective, the most that your average ISP changes your IP is once every 24 hours (assuming standard service). This effectively means that you have a static IP for that period of time.

What's the game and your current setup? Got any firewalls running for instance?

Currently trying Zdaemon (yes I still play doom) but the problem appears with other games as well.  Iv'e tried setting static IPs on the computers that Iv'e tried but this doesn't seem to work either.  Iv'e also tried disabling all firewalls and having a direct connection from the pc to the modem but still no go.

Here's a link to my ISPs DSL information site and it states a NO SERVERS POLICY but I thought there might be a way around it.

although my ISP says its leased for 24 hours when I type ipconfig/all into the command prompt it usually leases for about a week.

[color=66ff00]Ever since filesharing and bittorrent in particular took off lots of ISP's have started traffic shaping. Your ISP doesn't happen to run subscription gaming servers does it?

EDIT: ahhh, they're using the 'to protect your interests' nonsense. Read it as 'to protect our interests.

Looks like you're out of luck unless you can run it over Tor or use some kind of transparent encryption to hide the nature of the traffic from your ISP.

Since I'm apparently out of luck as you said I guess I'll just have to deal with playing on others servers for a while.

I'll check into subsciption gaming seervers but even if they do offer it I'd say the prices are outrageuos.

Thanks anyway.:)

Are you sure your IP is real? You might be behind NAT or something. You can't run an Internet-visible server behind NAT unless you:
a) know the real IP of the NAT machine,
b) get a port on that IP forwarded directly to your server.

So I'd say they enforce the 'no servers' rule very effectively by putting everyone behind NAT.

If your IP is 10.x.x.x or 192.168.x.x, that's a good indication that you haven't got a direct connection. DHCP switching your IP every 24 hours is not a problem for a server unless it happens while a connection is open.

I'd ***** to your ISP about their poor support and them causing some of your valid, legal software to be unusable by their poor network configuration.

oh and setup a VPN with on of your friends and host through your VPN IP :D

I was planning on bithcing a bit tuesday not only over the DHCP stuff but sometimes when people call the house the DSL gets knocked off and the phone has this problem where it'll go through about half a ring and cut off.

And I'm gonna ask about the Fiber Optic cable they're running up my holler :D
